The end of CPF funding for driving licences: the situation

Since 1 January 2026, the standard car licence is no longer officially eligible for the Personal Training Account (CPF). This decision, announced in 2024 and implemented in 2025 with the progressive removal of files, ends a widespread practice: between 2020 and 2024, more than 2 million driving licences had been funded via this scheme, representing billions of euros in spending.

Why was it removed?

The government justified this decision on two main grounds. First, the CPF is a scheme designed for professional training, not for funding personal licences. Second, abuses had exploded: aggressive telephone canvassing, fraudulent organisations, phantom courses. The compulsory €100 financial contribution introduced in May 2024 had not been enough to curb the phenomenon.

What remains CPF-eligible in relation to driving

Note: some driving-related training remains eligible for CPF. This includes the CACES (safety driving certificate) for construction machinery and forklifts, goods transport training (C, CE, D licences), and professional driver qualifications. However, the standard car licence, accompanied driving, motorcycle A/A2 licence, boat licence and aviation licence are no longer CPF-fundable.

Alternatives to fund your licence in 2026

The government youth licence grant

For young people aged 15 to 25 in apprenticeship, the €500 grant (formerly linked to the apprenticeship contract) remains in place. Ask your training centre (CFA) or your OPCO to benefit from it.

The €1/day microcredit licence loan

The '€1 a day licence' scheme offered by certain State-partner banks allows you to spread the cost of a licence without interest (or at subsidised rates). Available for those aged 15–25, it applies to standard driving school training. Some local organisations have extended this scheme to job seekers.

France Travail (ex Pôle Emploi) grants

If you are a job seeker and a driving licence is necessary for your return to employment, France Travail can cover all or part of the cost via a Training Action (AF) or a Training-Associated Costs Grant (AFAF). A certificate from your advisor is required.

Regional Council grants

Many French regions offer specific grants for the driving licence, ranging from €300 to €1,200. These grants vary greatly from region to region and may be subject to income or age conditions. Check your region's website or the CAF.

Mobili-Pass (Action Logement)

For employees in the private sector whose employer contributes to the 1% housing levy, the Mobili-Pass grant can fund the licence if it is needed as part of a professional relocation. Amount: up to €1,500 subject to conditions.
