International Driving Permit: what it actually does in 2026

International Driving Permit in 2026: which countries require it, free ANTS procedure, 3-year validity. The full guide for stress-free travel abroad.

You are flying halfway across the world and a car rental company asks you for an International Driving Permit (IDP). You wonder whether it is truly mandatory, or just a formality everyone ignores. In 2026, the answer depends on the country, but also on your profile. Here is a clear guide to understand what the IDP really is, when it is essential and when it is useless.

What the IDP actually is

An official translation of your French licence

The International Driving Permit is not a standalone licence. It is a complementary document, written in several languages, that officially translates your French licence. It never replaces the original: both must be presented together at a police check or a vehicle rental.

The IDP relies on two international conventions: the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention. Most European countries recognise the Vienna Convention, which makes the IDP useless for French drivers travelling within the European Union or the European Economic Area. In countries that only recognise the Geneva Convention, however, the IDP becomes essential.

Do not confuse it with a certified translation

Many travellers pay huge amounts for certified translations when the IDP is largely enough. A certified translation is useful for heavy administrative steps like a licence exchange, but not for renting a car on holiday. The IDP is free, official and valid for three years: no need to go further for a simple road trip.

Countries that genuinely require the IDP

USA, Japan, Southeast Asia, Latin America

In the United States, the rules vary from state to state. Some accept the French licence alone, others require an IDP or an official translation. In practice, almost all major rental companies require the IDP to avoid disputes. In Japan, the IDP is mandatory and strictly checked: without it, you can neither rent nor drive, even with a valid French licence.

In Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia), the IDP is required on the ground by local police, particularly during checks or accidents. Without it, your insurance may refuse to cover a claim. In South America (Argentina, Brazil, Peru), same story: the French licence alone is legally insufficient according to local authorities.

The ANTS procedure, free and 100% online

How to apply without mistakes

Since 2017, IDP applications go exclusively through ANTS (the French national agency for secure documents). The procedure is free, unlike the many private websites that charge 30 to 80 euros for the same service. You will need a copy of your licence (both sides), a recent ID photo meeting ANTS standards, a proof of address less than six months old and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

The official lead time is 4 to 11 weeks. In practice, expect 2 to 3 months in summer. So plan ahead: if you leave in August, apply in May. The IDP is then sent directly to your home by tracked mail.

Validity and pitfalls

Three years, but with conditions

The IDP is valid for three years, or until your French licence expires if that happens sooner. Watch out: if your French licence is suspended or cancelled, the IDP loses all validity, even if it is still physically valid. Similarly, if you lose your French licence, the IDP cannot replace it: you must redo both.

Another classic trap: thinking the IDP authorises you to drive a vehicle category your French licence does not cover. If you only hold category B, the IDP will never let you drive a motorcycle or a heavy vehicle abroad. The IDP follows exactly the categories of your original licence.

Practical recap before leaving

The careful traveller's checklist

Before each trip, ask yourself three questions. First: does the country apply the Vienna Convention? If yes, your French licence is enough. Second: does your rental company require an IDP in its terms? Check carefully, some require it even where it is not legally mandatory. Third: does your travel insurance cover driving without an IDP in this country? If doubt creeps in, get the IDP: it is free and avoids all hassle.

Always carry both physical documents with you: a phone scan does not cut it. Police and rental companies want the originals. Also keep a separate photocopy in your luggage, in case you lose your wallet.

DevisPermis expert opinion

In 15 years working with driving licence candidates, we repeatedly see the same mistake: young drivers heading on a US road trip without an IDP, convinced their French licence is enough. The result: rental refusals at major chains, or worse, insurance pulling out after a fender-bender. The IDP costs nothing, takes ten minutes to apply for online and avoids thousands of euros in unexpected fees. Get it systematically before any trip outside the European Union, even when the country does not officially require it. It is a legal and insurance safety net that should not be debated.

Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

How to obtain an international driving permit in 2026?

The IDP application is made free of charge online on the ANTS site (Agence Nationale des Titres Securises). Required documents: valid French licence, ID, proof of address, photo, and digital signature. The manufacturing time is 4 to 6 weeks in 2026. The licence is valid for 3 years, not renewable from abroad.

Is the international permit free in France?

Yes, the international driving permit (IDP) is completely free in France since 2017. Only postal fees (4.95 euros tracked mail) may be requested. Beware of private sites charging 30 to 90 euros: they have no official value. The application is made only on ants.gouv.fr.

Which countries require an international permit?

Countries signatory to the 1968 Vienna Convention (Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, India, certain US states) require the IDP accompanied by the French licence. Non-EU countries like China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand also require it. In the EU and EEA, the French licence is sufficient. Check diplomatie.gouv.fr before leaving.

How long is the international permit valid?

The French IDP is valid for 3 years from issue date, or until expiration of the national licence if earlier. It is NOT renewable from abroad: you must return to France to make a new application. Allow 4 to 6 weeks delay, anticipate your application at least 2 months before departure.
