Driving license services: highway code, points recovery course, file transfer

The essentials

Additional driving licence services in France cover five common procedures: sitting the highway code (ETG, EUR 30 at La Poste, SGS or Pointcode), transferring your driving school file (Hamon law, free), licence cancellation and recovery after 48SI, the points recovery course (4 points in 2 days, EUR 200-280) and the exchange or conversion of a foreign licence via ANTS. DevisPermis connects you with authorised centres and certified driving schools.

Everything about the driving license services

Around your license, a series of practical services can greatly simplify your life: highway code preparation, file transfer between driving schools, points recovery courses, regularising a foreign license in France, or reinstating a license after cancellation. Each situation has its own rules and contacts: ANTS for administrative matters, the prefecture for cancelled or foreign licenses, approved centres for points recovery. DevisPermis supports you at each step by guiding you to the right partners, at the right price, with the right procedure. Whether you have lost points, moved cities or need to convert a license obtained abroad, our advisors and partner centres secure your process.

Why use these services?

  • Save time: ANTS and prefecture procedures can be complex without support.
  • Recover up to 4 license points in 2 days with an approved course, before losing your right to drive.
  • Switch driving schools without fees or lost hours when your current school no longer suits you.
  • Secure your foreign license process to avoid prefecture rejections and endless delays.

Who are these services for?

  • License candidates: ETG preparation, partner school search, file transfer.
  • Drivers who committed offences: points recovery course before cancellation.
  • New French residents: conversion or exchange of a foreign license (non-EU, EU, EEA).
  • Drivers who lost their license: support for medical, psycho-technical tests and re-taking.

How does it work?

  • First contact: free quote in 2 minutes with callback within 48h by a partner near you.
  • Personalised analysis of your situation by an advisor (code, transfer, points, foreign license, cancellation).
  • Referral to the right service: approved points course centre, partner school, specific ANTS procedure.
  • Full support throughout the process, with transparent pricing and no surprises.
  • Final follow-up until the outcome is achieved (code, license restored, points recovered, equivalence granted).

Our tips to choose wisely

  • Points course: check the centre is prefecture-approved (mandatory approval number).
  • File transfer: legally free - beware schools charging for this service.
  • Foreign license: procedure depends on the country of origin (EU, EEA, bilateral convention, others). Wrong routing can delay the request by several months.
  • License cancellation: do not wait for the end of the ban period to prepare the medical and psycho-technical tests.

Frequently asked questions

My theory test has expired - do I have to start again?

If your ETG has expired (more than 5 years ago) and you have not yet obtained your license, you will need to retake the test. If you already hold a license, the ETG no longer has an expiry date.

Can I change driving schools during my training?

Yes, and it is your right. Your NEPH file belongs to you and can be transferred to a new driving school at any time, free of charge. Our service can help you find an available partner school quickly in your area.

How much does a points recovery course cost?

A points recovery course costs between €350 and €400 depending on the approved centre. This includes both full days of training. Request a quote to find a partner centre near you.

How many points can I recover in one course?

An approved course allows recovering up to 4 points, within the 12-point cap (or 6 on probationary license). Only one course is allowed per 12-month period.

How long does a foreign license exchange take?

Average delay is 3 to 12 months depending on the license nationality and prefecture. EU/EEA licenses only need exchange after an offence or expiry. Non-EU licenses depend on bilateral agreements.

How do I reinstate a license after judicial cancellation?

Wait until the end of the ban period, pass a medical with an approved doctor, a psycho-technical test, then re-sit the code (and driving depending on cases). The process takes 2 to 6 months and costs €500 to €1,500.

What is the difference between cancellation and invalidation?

Cancellation is pronounced by a judge (severe DUI, driving without license, repeat offence). Invalidation occurs automatically at 0 points. Both require re-taking exams. Minimum wait to re-sit is 6 months (cancellation) or immediate for invalidation.

Can the code exam be taken remotely?

No, the ETG must be taken in person in an approved centre (La Poste, SGS, Dekra, Objectif Code, Bureau Veritas). Preparation however can be fully online via ministry-approved apps.

Can I take a preventive points course?

Yes, any driver can take a voluntary course to recover points, provided they have lost at least 1 point and within the yearly limit. Useful before a risky exam or if nearing zero balance.

What is the probationary period for a new license?

After a new license (including after cancellation), you are in a probationary period with a 6-point capital that grows by 2 points per year (without offences) to reach 12 points in 3 years (or 2 years with initial accompanied driving).
