Helicopter pilot licenses: LAPL and PPL

The essentials

The French helicopter license is the European EASA license authorising helicopter piloting, available in two main levels: LAPL(H) for European leisure (40 flight hours minimum) and PPL(H) for international private flying (45h minimum). Training is conducted on aircraft such as Robinson R22, R44 or Guimbal Cabri G2. Price ranges from EUR 15,000 to EUR 25,000 for a LAPL(H) and from EUR 20,000 to EUR 35,000 for a PPL(H), with a mandatory aviation medical (LAPL class or Class 2 with a DGAC-approved AME doctor).

Everything about the helicopter license

The helicopter license is the EASA-standard pilot license that authorises helicopter flying. Getting your helicopter license unlocks a unique experience: hovering, landing on unprepared surfaces, precise manoeuvres that do not exist on airplanes. Helicopter license training is demanding but accessible, via two main paths: LAPL-H for European leisure use and PPL-H for full international recognition. The helicopter license requires more technical training than airplanes, especially for simultaneous management of collective, cyclic and pedals - but in return offers unmatched versatility: vertical take-off and landing, low-altitude flight, access to areas unreachable otherwise. DevisPermis connects you with DGAC-certified partner schools for your helicopter license, comparing flight-hour rates and aircraft types (Robinson R22, R44, Guimbal Cabri G2).

What is the helicopter license?

  • The helicopter license is the official EASA license authorising piloting: LAPL-H (leisure) or PPL-H (private).
  • Unique piloting experience: hovering, landing anywhere (with authorisation), 360° view.
  • Unmatched mobility: land in urban areas, in the mountains, by the sea without needing a runway.
  • Career possibilities: EMS, aerial work (video, photo, spraying), tourism, instruction, mountain rescue.

LAPL-H (leisure) or PPL-H (private) license?

  • LAPL-H: 40h flight minimum, valid across EASA airspace, ideal for European leisure flying.
  • PPL-H: 45h minimum, international recognition, gateway to the professional CPL-H.
  • Aviation enthusiasts looking for a more technical discipline than airplanes.
  • Airplane pilots (PPL-A) wanting to extend privileges to helicopters.

Theoretical + practical helicopter license training

  • ATO theory (around 100h): specific to the helicopter license (autorotation, ground effect, flight mechanics).
  • Practical flying: minimum 40h for LAPL-H, 45h for PPL-H.
  • DGAC theory exams (9 helicopter QCMs) then practical flight exam.
  • LAPL Class or Class 2 medical with a DGAC-approved AME doctor.
  • Possible extensions: night flying, mountain, instrument rating (IR-H).

Helicopter license price and DGAC-certified centers

  • Helicopter license price: LAPL-H from €14,000, PPL-H between €20,000 and €35,000 depending on the aircraft.
  • Hourly cost is the main factor: R22 is cheaper (€250-350/h), R44 more comfortable (€450-600/h).
  • Check the school is a DGAC-certified center (ATO, Approved Training Organization) before signing.
  • Prefer a DGAC-certified center with multiple instructors and aircraft to avoid waiting times.
  • For medical formalities and foreign license equivalences, consult Service Public or contact the DGAC directly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is helicopter training more expensive than flying a plane?

Helicopters are mechanically more complex aircraft, with operating and maintenance costs far higher than light planes. Fuel consumption is also greater, which is reflected in the price of flight hours.

Can a helicopter be used for personal travel?

Yes, this is precisely what the LAPL(H) and PPL(H) allow. You can land on any surface (with the owner’s permission), avoid busy airports and access areas inaccessible to planes. It is a very versatile personal transport tool.

Which helicopter is recommended for initial training?

The Robinson R22 is the most common for initial training due to its lower operating cost. For LAPL(H) and PPL(H), the R44 (4 seats) is also very popular. Some schools use the Guimbal Cabri G2, which is more modern and appreciated by instructors.

How much does a full PPL(H) cost?

Between €20,000 and €35,000 depending on the school, aircraft type and actual hours needed. Cost is split between flight hours (70-80%), theory (5%) and additional fees (medical, exam, admin).

From what age can I fly a helicopter?

Training can start from age 14. First solo is permitted at 16. The LAPL(H) license is issued from age 17, as is the PPL(H).

Does an airplane pilot need to start over for helicopters?

No, some equivalences exist. If you hold a PPL(A), you benefit from theory credits. The practical part remains full however, as the piloting technique is very different (at least 35h minimum).

What is the difference between LAPL(H) and PPL(H)?

The LAPL(H) is limited to helicopters under 2 tonnes and 4 seats, only in Europe, in day VFR. The PPL(H) allows piloting all helicopters authorised on the license, worldwide, and adding qualifications (night flight, IFR, multi-engine).

Can I make a living with helicopters?

Yes, but you must progress to CPL(H) (Commercial Pilot Licence Helicopter), which requires at least 155 flight hours and a full curriculum. Job opportunities include EMS, aerial work, training, on-demand transport, offshore. The CPF via Mon Compte Formation and France Travail can co-finance the professional path as part of a career change.

Which qualifications can be added after the license?

Night flying, IFR (instrument rating), mountain flying, multi-engine, specific type ratings (EC120, H130, AS350). Each qualification requires dedicated training, often 5 to 15 flight hours depending on level.

Where do helicopter pilots train in France?

About 40 ATO schools exist in France, mainly in the south (Aix, Cannes, Avignon, Toulouse) and around Paris. Some offer intensive residential programmes allowing the license to be completed in 3-4 months.
