Recover up to 4 points in 2 days

Point Recovery Course

The road safety awareness course allows drivers to recover up to 4 points on their driving license, up to the maximum of 12 points. This 2-day course, supervised by the French Road Safety and defined by article L.223-6 of the Code de la route, takes place at a prefecture-approved centre and combines awareness exercises, role-play scenarios and group discussions. It is delivered by a duo: a psychologist and a Brevet d’Aptitude à la Formation des Conducteurs Responsables (BAFCR). You can check your point balance in real time on Mes Points Permis with FranceConnect, and book a course before letter 48N from ANTAI notifies a critical loss. Average price: €200 to €280 depending on region, never refunded by the State or social security.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exceed 12 points with a course?

No. The course allows you to recover a maximum of 4 points, up to the 12-point limit. If you already have 12 points, the course will not add any more.

Is the course reimbursed by my employer or the State?

No, the course is not funded by the State or by employers in general. Some companies offer this as a staff benefit, but it is not a legal obligation.

How many times can I take a point recovery course?

You can take one course per calendar year at most. The gap between two courses is at least 1 year and 1 day. If you recover 4 points per course but regularly lose points, consider adapting your driving behaviour permanently. Checking your balance on Mes Points Permis (account secured via FranceConnect) before booking avoids unnecessary steps.

When will I receive letter 48N and how to react?

The 48N letter from ANTAI is sent by registered post when you lose 6 points or more (or your probationary license drops below a critical threshold). It indicates the obligation of a course: refusal = full license loss. The course must be taken within 4 months of receipt. Keep the letter carefully, it will be required at course registration.

Can a voluntary course be taken before letter 48N?

Yes, and it is even recommended. Any license holder who has lost at least 1 point can register for a voluntary course (article L.223-6 of the Code de la route). This course earns 4 points up to the cap. It is particularly useful for probationary drivers who have lost several points: avoiding waiting for invalidation is crucial.

Is the course mandatory for young drivers?

Yes, in some cases. If a probationary driver loses 3 or more points in a single offence, they receive an ANTAI 48N letter and must complete a mandatory course within 4 months (article L.223-6 of the Code de la route). The cost remains theirs (~€200-280). Otherwise, license loss and obligation to retake code + practical.

Is the voluntary course tax deductible?

No, the awareness course is not tax deductible for individuals. However, it can be covered by the employer as part of the training plan, especially for professional drivers (chauffeurs, deliverers, sales reps). Ask your HR department or OPCO. What is a points recovery course?

A points recovery course (officially: road safety awareness course) is a 2-day training session organised by a centre approved by the prefecture. The points recovery course allows a driver who has lost points after one or several offences to recover up to 4 points on their driving licence balance, without taking an exam and without a knowledge test at the end. The points recovery course is built around group discussions led by a road psychologist and a holder of the BAFCR diploma. It is the only legal way to recover points faster than the automatic 2 or 3-year cooldown set by the Code de la route.

How many points recovered: 4 points maximum

A points recovery course credits a flat 4 points to the driving licence balance, capped by the maximum 12-point capital (or 6, 8, 10 points during the probationary period depending on the year). If you only need 2 points to recover a full balance, only those 2 are added: the unused points are not stored or carried over. The new balance becomes visible on the Mes Points Permis portal 3 to 4 weeks after the points recovery course, once the centre has transmitted the certificate to the ANTS. The 4-point credit is independent from the automatic recovery linked to a clean record over time.

Duration of the course: 2 days (14 hours)

A points recovery course runs over 2 consecutive days, 7 hours per day, for a total of 14 hours of effective training. Sessions are usually held from Monday to Saturday in city centre rooms, with morning and afternoon blocks separated by a lunch break. Attendance is mandatory across the full 14 hours: a single missed half-day cancels the entire course, no points are recovered and the fee is not refunded by the centre. The points recovery course does not include any exam, no test, no role play with vehicles: it is a group discussion format with a focus on accident analysis, risk factors and personal driving habits.

Price of the points recovery course

An approved points recovery course is priced from 180 EUR and generally falls between 200 and 320 EUR depending on the city, the centre and the time of year. The fee covers the 14 hours of training spread over 2 days, the educational materials and the certificate forwarded to the ANTS. The points recovery course is not reimbursed by the State or the social security fund; some employers cover it as a workplace welfare benefit. Prices are freely set by each prefecture-approved centre, which explains the gap between rural areas and large cities such as Paris, Lyon or Marseille. Always check the price before booking the points recovery course: a few centres add charges for the educational booklet or the certificate.

Conditions to take a course

To register for a points recovery course, you must hold a valid driving licence with no current suspension or cancellation, keep at least 1 point on your balance and respect the minimum delay of 1 year and 1 day between two voluntary courses. The point of departure for that delay is the first day of the previous points recovery course, not the day the new balance was updated by the ANTS. The course can be taken at any approved centre in France, regardless of where you live: the certificate is valid nationwide. Bring a valid ID document, the driving licence and, for a court-ordered course, the judicial notification on the first morning. Without these documents, the centre refuses the registration and no points are recovered.

Voluntary vs compulsory course

A points recovery course is voluntary in most cases: the driver registers and pays for the course to recover 4 points before the balance reaches zero. It becomes compulsory in two situations. First, for a probationary licence holder who loses 3 or more points on a single infraction: the prefecture sends a 48N letter and the driver has 4 months to attend a points recovery course, with State funding via a fee reimbursement after attendance. Second, it can be ordered by a criminal court as an additional sentence after a traffic offence (judicial course). In the compulsory case, the 4-point credit also applies, capped by the available capital.
