What is the AM licence (BSR)?

The AM licence, formerly known as the BSR (Brevet de Sécurité Routière), has been mandatory since 2013 to ride a moped (scooter or moped) with a maximum speed of 45 km/h and an engine displacement below 50cc (or power below 4 kW). It can be obtained from age 14.

Who needs the AM licence?

The AM licence is mandatory for anyone born after 1 January 1988 who wishes to ride a 50cc moped. People born before that date can ride a 50cc without an AM licence, but only if they obtained their car licence before 1988. Foreign nationals riding in France are subject to the same rules.

How does the training work?

Theory training

The training includes a theory section covering highway code rules adapted to light two-wheelers, safety equipment and risks specific to mopeds.

Practical training

The practical training (ASSR 2 or equivalent) includes 7 hours of riding on a circuit and in traffic with an instructor. Risk awareness modules complement the training.

What does AM training cost?

AM licence training costs between €250 and €450. This fee includes practical training hours, theory training and administrative fees. Some schools offer preferential rates for young people aged 14-15.

AM licence vs motorcycle licence: what are the differences?

The AM licence only covers mopeds (50cc, max 45 km/h). The A1 licence (available from age 16) allows riding light motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW. The A2 licence (minimum age 18) opens access to motorcycles up to 35 kW. For real motorcycles, the AM licence is not sufficient.
