In Paris, the BSR, now AM license, attracts several thousand 14-year-olds each year who want greater autonomy on a 50cc scooter. The capital concentrates around a hundred approved driving schools, certified practice areas spread across Greater Paris, and a price framework 30 to 40% higher than the provinces. Understanding the Paris offer, LEZ constraints and ASSR procedures before registering your child helps choose the right school and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Why 14 Is the Key Age in Paris

From age 14, a Parisian can ride a 50cc scooter alone provided they hold the AM license. This is the minimum age set by French law and applicable nationwide. In practice, registration at a driving school is possible 1 month before the 14th birthday, provided the practical training begins after the cutoff date.

For Parisian families, this milestone often marks autonomy on home-school trips, sports activities or student jobs. A 50cc scooter legally rides on Parisian roads except major traffic routes (ring road, riverside roads closed to light two-wheelers), at a maximum of 45 km/h. Bus lanes remain off-limits to 50cc, unlike 125cc.

Approved Paris Driving Schools BSR/AM

Of the 100 Parisian driving schools offering the AM license, about 60 have their own practice area, mainly located in Bagnolet, Pantin, Aubervilliers, Ivry and Issy-les-Moulineaux. Others rent slots on shared facilities, which can extend registration delays in high season.

To validate a school's seriousness, check the prefectural approval displayed in the window (4-digit + letters number), the presence of an up-to-date website, and the trainer's qualification (BEPECASER or ECSR Professional Title with two-wheeler option). The Qualiopi label, mandatory since 2022 for CPF-fundable bodies, is not required for the AM license but remains a guarantee of pedagogical structure.

Districts Where to Find a School Easily

Districts 11, 12, 18, 19 and 20 concentrate the most AM driving schools, due to proximity to eastern suburb practice areas. The 15th and 16th also have structured schools with access to Issy and Boulogne practice areas. The historic center (1st to 8th) offers fewer options, and registration delays often exceed 4 weeks in May-June.

2026 Paris Prices: 350 to 500 Euros

The average price for a complete AM license in Paris is set in 2026 between 350 and 500 euros, loan equipment included. High-end schools in the center offer packages at 480-550 euros including reinforced pedagogical follow-up, recent scooter and new equipment. Neighborhood schools in the 18th, 19th and 20th districts often offer entry prices at 350-380 euros.

Always compare the detail of services: a 380-euro package without protective equipment or ANTS support costs more than a 420-euro all-inclusive package. Request a written quote mentioning the 8 hours, equipment, scooter, approved photo and ANTS transmission. Refuse schools that charge extra for the end-of-training certificate.

8-Hour Duration over 2 to 3 Days

In Paris, AM training is classically held over 2 intensive half-days (4 hours each) or over 3 days (3h + 3h + 2h) for students preferring a more gradual pace. School holidays (All Saints, Christmas, February, Easter, summer) are the busiest times: book 4 to 6 weeks in advance.

Parisian schools often offer an 8 or 9 a.m. start, return around noon, then resume at 2 p.m. for a full day. Avoid packages spread over 4 or 5 half-days: the break extends learning and fragments the acquisition of automatic responses. The trainer observes the student continuously and validates progress on a 32-skill grid defined by ministerial order.

Mandatory Parental Support

Registering a minor under 16 requires the signature of a parent or legal guardian, as well as the presence of an adult during the first training session in Paris. Most schools also request a copy of the parent's ID, proof of Parisian residence less than 3 months old, and the family record book.

The parent can attend the 2-hour theoretical session, which helps understand safety instructions and relay good reflexes at home. Some Parisian schools organize parent information meetings at the start of the cycle, particularly useful for addressing helmet use, urban visibility and scooter no-go zones.

ASSR in Middle School: Plan Ahead

ASSR2 is taken in 9th grade in all Parisian middle schools, whether public or private under contract. The Paris Rectorate organizes a main session in March-April and a catch-up in June. In case of failure, the student can retake the test the following year or request the ASR from a Parisian GRETA (centers in Pigalle, Chevaleret and Reuilly notably).

Keep the paper certificate provided by the middle school: it is required for driving school registration. A loss requires requesting a duplicate from the original middle school, sometimes long to obtain. Scan the document upon receipt and store it in a family cloud to avoid any setback.

Paris Equipment: LEZ and Vest

Paris is a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) that restricts circulation of certain powered two-wheelers. Combustion 50cc scooters registered after 2004 (Crit'Air 1 or 2 sticker) remain authorized 24/7. Models prior to 2000 (Crit'Air 5 or unclassified) are prohibited Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the vehicle registration before purchase or family loan.

On personal equipment, regulations impose ECE 22-06 helmet, CE motorcycle gloves and ankle boots. Paris adds strongly recommends a retroreflective vest for night travel and long pants covering ankles. FFMC Paris organizes each autumn a free equipment information day on Place de la Republique, open to young riders.

ANTS Procedures from Paris

Once training is validated by the driving school, the title request is made on ants.gouv.fr via FranceConnect (parents' Impots.gouv.fr or Ameli account). In Paris, the average title reception time is 14 to 21 days, against 21 to 28 days nationally, thanks to the Ile-de-France dispatch center.

The provisional certificate (CEPC) remains valid for 4 months and allows riding while waiting. In case of police check in Paris, present the CEPC, ASSR2 and scooter registration. Law enforcement now accepts the digital version on smartphone, but a paper copy in the scooter trunk remains prudent.
