What is the 125cc training course?
The 125cc training course (or simplified A1 licence) allows car licence holders who have held their licence for more than 2 years to ride a motor vehicle with a maximum displacement of 125cc (category A1: light motorcycles up to 11 kW). It is not an additional licence but a mandatory training course noted on your car licence.
Who can take this training?
You can take the 125cc training if you have held a car licence for at least 2 years. There is no particular age requirement beyond the minimum age for a car licence (18, or 16 with accompanied driving). People in their probationary period (less than 2 years of licence) cannot yet benefit.
How does the training work?
7 hours of training in 2 parts
The training takes place over 7 hours at an approved driving school: 3 hours off-road (manoeuvrability on a circuit, familiarisation with the two-wheeler) and 4 hours on-road. A motorcycle instructor accompanies you throughout. No final exam is required: a training certificate is issued.
What vehicles can you ride after the training?
After training, you can ride any motorcycle or scooter with a displacement below 125cc and power below 11 kW (15 hp). This covers the vast majority of urban scooters, Honda CB125, Yamaha YBR125, etc. Electric scooters and e-bikes do not require this training.
What does 125cc training cost?
The 125cc training costs between €200 and €400 depending on the school. This fee includes the 7 hours of training and the certificate. It is a very accessible investment compared to a full motorcycle licence, for very practical urban mobility.
