What is the A2 motorcycle licence?

The A2 licence is the intermediate category of motorcycle licence in France. It allows riding motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW (48 hp) and a power-to-weight ratio below 0.2 kW/kg. It is the ideal entry point for new adult riders aged 18 and over.

Who can take the A2 licence?

To take the A2 licence, you must be at least 18 years old. It is not necessary to hold a car licence (B), although this is often the case. Note: if you already hold a car licence (B) or an A1 licence for at least 2 years, a shorter 7-hour course can replace the full training, significantly cutting both cost and overall duration. Otherwise, the full training of at least 20 hours of practice applies. The A2 licence must be held for a minimum of 2 years before upgrading to the full A licence.

A2 training: how does it work?

Initial training

Training has two parts: theory (ETM - Motorcycle Theory Test) and practical training. If you already hold a car licence (B), you are exempt from the general theory test (ETG), but you must still pass the ETM, which is specific to motorcycles.

The circuit (manoeuvrability) - ETM

The circuit test, officially named ETM (Manoeuvrability Test), evaluates control of the two-wheeler at low speed on a marked course: slalom, avoidance, U-turn, emergency braking and obstacle avoidance. This test is feared by candidates as it demands precision and balance. Motorcycle schools offer specific practice sessions.

On-road riding - ETPM

The on-road test, officially named ETPM (On-road Motorcycle Test), lasts about 35 minutes. The examiner follows the candidate by car or on a motorcycle and assesses junction handling, compliance with speed limits, direction changes and general road behaviour.

What does the A2 licence cost?

The A2 licence costs on average between €1,200 and €1,800, depending on the region and training hours needed. This fee generally includes theory preparation, mandatory riding hours and exam fees. Get a free quote via DevisPermis.fr to compare partner motorcycle schools.

From A2 to full A licence: the natural progression

After 2 years holding the A2 licence (or at age 21 for those who obtained A2 at 18), you can upgrade to the full A licence via a 7-hour supplementary course. This includes a theory part and a simplified practical test. The cost is approximately €300 to €600.

The A2 motorcycle licence is accessible from age 18 in France. You must pass the specific motorcycle theory (ETM) since 2020, then follow 20 hours of training (8h off-road, 12h on-road). The candidate rides a motorcycle restricted to 35 kW maximum (47.5 hp). Count 700 to 1,200 euros depending on the region. Tip: check that the school has its own approved practice area.

How long is the A2 training?

A2 training lasts 20 hours minimum in 2025, split into 8 hours off-road and 12 hours on-road. In practice, the actual average reaches 25 to 30 hours for most learners. Count 2 to 4 months between registration and final exam, depending on theory wait times and practical exam slot availability in your department.

What tips to pass the A2 off-road exam?

Master the 3 tests: low speed (slalom and U-turn), high speed (avoidance at 50 km/h) and emergency braking. The scoring allows 1 eliminatory mistake per test. Practice at least 8 hours on the off-road area to automate trajectories. Tip: position your gaze 10 metres ahead, never stare at the obstacle. The off-road pass rate reaches 78 percent in France.
