Every year, over 30,000 vehicles are impounded in Paris per Police Prefecture figures (2025). An impound costs at least €252 in 2026 and can exceed €500 with prolonged immobilisation. This practical guide explains how to avoid the tow yard, how to find your vehicle if the worst happened, and what recourse against an abusive impound.
Most frequent removal reasons
Five situations represent 85% of Paris impounds per the 2025 Prefecture report. 1) Disruptive parking (double park, driveway, bus stop): 35%. 2) Signposted banned parking (B6a, B6b, B6d sign): 28%. 3) Plate-less or wreck vehicle: 12%. 4) Delivery zone in pro hours: 7%. 5) Crossing, pavement or cycle-path stop: 3%.
Very high-risk zones
Some Paris areas record the most impounds: Place de l'Étoile (on crossings), Eiffel Tower surroundings (fire lane), Latin Quarter (pavement parking), station areas (chronic double park), rue de Rivoli (LTZ breach). Avoid these in an urgent parking search.
How to avoid impoundment
Six golden rules. 1) Always read signage before parking, even for minutes. 2) Pay the meter or P Mobile app on arrival. 3) Never park on crossings or bike paths, even « just 2 minutes ». 4) Respect delivery hours (7-11 am for pros in mixed zone). 5) Check temporary municipal orders (marathon, parade, neighbour moving). 6) In Paris Centre LTZ, verify eligibility.
Signs to know
Four signs systematically trigger impoundment on offence: B6a1 (no parking), B6d (disruptive parking), B6b2 (no stopping), M6a (tow yard + main sign). If you see them, do not park: an impound can happen within 10 minutes of the ticket.
Your car was impounded: what to do in 2026?
First step: confirm your vehicle was impounded (not stolen or towed by someone else). Call 3430 (Police Prefecture phone service), available 24/7. With your plate and ID, the agent tells you if it was impounded and at which yard. Average wait at 3430: 8 minutes off-peak, 25-30 minutes evenings.
The 7 Paris tow yards
Paris has 7 yards across Paris and near suburbs. 1) Hôtel de Ville yard (4th, for the centre). 2) Vincennes yard (12th). 3) North yard (18th). 4) West yard (Neuilly-sur-Seine). 5) South yard (Montrouge). 6) Île-de-France yard (Gennevilliers). 7) Truck yard (large vehicles, Pantin). 2026 rates
Per the 14 November 2022 decree updated in 2025, Paris tow rates: removal (impound operation): €127. Daily storage: €34. Vehicle expertise (if deemed unrecoverable): €61. Immobilisation fees: €7.60/day. Recovery within 24h thus costs at least 127 + 34 = €161. Beyond 10 days, the car may be declared a wreck.
Accepted payment methods
Paris yards accept: bank card (immediate), cash (capped €300), cashier's cheque (not personal cheque). No mobile payment (PayLib, Apple Pay) in 2026. Bring card + ID + registration (carte grise).
Documents to present
To recover your vehicle: valid ID, vehicle registration, insurance certificate, valid licence (if you drive). Spouses need power of attorney + ID + family record book. No recovery without these.
Appeals for abusive impoundment
Contest the removal: administrative appeal to the ticket-issuing police station within 48h, then litigation before the Administrative Court within 2 months. Valid grounds: missing or unenforceable signage, plate error, regularly-parked vehicle. A road-law specialist lawyer charges €300-500 for the procedure.
