Horodateur moderne à Paris et voiture stationnée en rue

Parking in Paris is as complex as driving in the capital. High hourly rates, post-parking fee (FPS) for forgetters, residential and mixed zones, SUV-specific rules since 2024: the young driver must navigate a dense regulatory ecosystem. Complete 2026 guide to find your way.

Paris parking zones and 2026 rates

Paris is divided into two major fare zones: zone 1 (expanded centre: 1st to 11th districts, plus 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th) and zone 2 (18th, 19th, 20th and some peripheral zones).

Zone 1 (centre): the rates

In zone 1, the 2026 visitor rate is €6 for the first hour, €8 for the second, €24 for the third and fourth. Beyond 6h, paid parking is banned (except in mixed zone with partner underground parking). The resident rate for a district inhabitant is €9 per week, or €468 per year maximum.

Zone 2 (periphery): more affordable rates

In zone 2, the visitor rate drops to €4 for the first hour, €6 for the second, €14 for the third and fourth. Resident rate is €4 per week, or €208 per year. These zones are more numerous in the capital’s north-east and south-east.

Post-Parking Fee (FPS)

Since parking decriminalisation in 2018, the traditional ticket has been replaced by the FPS (Post-Parking Fee). In Paris, the FPS is €50 in zone 1 and €35 in zone 2 if paid within 72 hours. Beyond, it is doubled (€100 zone 1, €70 zone 2). The FPS is issued by the City of Paris, not the police.

Automatic LAPI enforcement

Since 2023, Paris paid-parking enforcement is done by two complementary systems: City agents (about 1,500 controllers), and LAPI-equipped vehicles (automatic plate reading). These cars circulate in central districts and automatically scan plates. A vehicle without declared payment is fined in seconds.

Contesting an FPS

The deadline to contest an FPS is one month. First step: RAPO (Mandatory Prior Administrative Appeal) with the City of Paris. If refused, possibility of referral to the Parking Fee Litigation Commission (CCSP). In 30% of cases, the FPS is cancelled on supporting documents (breakdown, medical emergency, payment issue).

Resident and mixed parking zones

Paris streets are marked on the ground and by signs according to three statuses: " Rotation " zone (paid for all), " Resident " zone (almost free for district inhabitants) and " Mixed " zone (resident + visitor depending on hours). Resident young drivers must systematically declare their plate to the City of Paris via Paris.fr to benefit from the resident rate.

Applying for resident card

The resident card is free but requires proof of residence under 3 months and the vehicle registration in the resident’s name. 1-year renewable validity. To be done upon moving to a district: without it, impossible to park long at accessible price.

Specific rules: SUV, PRM, electric charging

Since September 2024, SUVs over 1.6 tonnes (thermal) or 2 tonnes (electric and hybrid) are surcharged: €18 first hour instead of €6 in zone 1, and €12 in zone 2. This rule, voted by referendum in February 2024, is a Paris particularity.

PRM places

Places reserved for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) are free and unlimited duration for CMI-S or CMI-I card holders. Use without justification is fined with a €135 enhanced FPS. In Paris, about 4,500 PRM places are distributed across the territory.

Electric charging places

Places equipped with charging stations are reserved for vehicles currently charging. An electric vehicle parked without charging (or already charged) is fined €35 FPS. Parking remains paid for energy (about €0.40/kWh) but the spot is free.

Alternatives: underground parkings and apps

Paris has 65 public underground parkings (Saemes, Indigo, Parif). 2026 day rates: €25-35 centre, €18-25 periphery. Resident subscriptions: €150-280/month. More economical alternative: place sharing via apps (Zenpark, Yespark) or home parking services (Travelcar, PrestoPark) with 40-60% lower rates.
