The boat licence in Paris: a revived market
Paris and the Seine attract many candidates for the river licence and pleasure craft licence every year. Since 2023, the market has experienced renewed interest: individuals who buy a liveable boat on the Seine or the Ourcq canal, executives who want to rent a boat for their weekends, entrepreneurs who invest in event barges. In 2025, more than 4,800 boat licences were issued in Paris and Île-de-France, +24% compared to 2023.
The boat licence in France comes in three main categories that Parisian candidates must clearly distinguish before choosing their training.
The 3 boat licence categories in 2026
Pleasure licence coastal option
Allows piloting a motor boat less than 6 nautical miles from a shelter (coastal navigation zone). For Parisians, this licence is mainly useful for weekends in Normandy, Brittany, or the French Riviera. Minimum training: 3h30 of practice + theoretical exam. Budget in Paris: €350 - €490.
Pleasure licence inland waters option (river licence)
This is THE licence to take for the Seine and Parisian canals. Allows piloting a motor boat on French rivers, canals and lakes. Minimum training: 3h of practice + theoretical exam. Budget in Paris: €330 - €450.
Offshore extension
To navigate more than 6 miles from a shelter (offshore navigation at sea). Complementary to the coastal licence. Training: 2 days + exam. Budget: €380 - €520. Not very relevant for Parisians who would navigate exclusively on the Seine.
The river licence training in Paris
Training includes a theoretical part (in class or online) covering river regulations, signage, safety on board, river navigation principles, and a practical part on a boat on the Seine.
The main centers in Paris and Île-de-France: École de Bateau Paris (7th), Ecole Nationale de la Voile et des Sports Nautiques (ENVSN), Cap Croisière (13th), Paris Boat Club (15th), Harbour Master School (Port de Paris). Most organize practice from Arsenal, Grenelle or Bercy marinas, or from Maisons-Alfort.
The practical course of a training in 2026
Theory most often takes place online via the school platform (autonomously, 5-10 hours of revision recommended). The theoretical exam lasts 30 minutes for 30 questions (26 correct answers minimum).
Practice takes place in 3-4 consecutive hours on a school boat. Program: departure and arrival at the pontoon, elementary maneuvers, navigation with chart tracking, reaction in case of incident (simulated man overboard). At the end of these hours, if the instructor estimates the candidate ready, he delivers the practical certificate. No practical exam evaluated by an external jury (this is specific to the boat licence).
Detailed rates in Paris in 2026
River licence alone (basic pack): €330 - €420. Includes online theoretical training, 3 hours practical, 1 presentation to the theoretical exam. Comfort pack: €450 - €580 with 5-6 hours practical and personalized coaching. Coastal + river pack: €590 - €750 to have both licences.
Additional practical hours if needed: €90-130 per hour. These are relatively high rates justified by the cost of the school boat (between €150 and €300 per hour of use).
Where to pilot after the licence in Île-de-France?
The river licence opens a vast navigation ground. In Paris: inner Seine (from Paris Issy to Charenton), Saint-Martin canal, Ourcq canal. In Île-de-France: upstream Seine (Melun, Montereau), downstream Seine (Mantes, Poissy), Loing canal, Centre canal, Yonne. Possibility to navigate to the Seine estuary (Le Havre) with river licence if staying in river zone.
Boat rental in Paris: from €90 per hour (small boat 5-6 people) to €350 per hour (barge 10-15 people). For a day, count €400-900. Several serious renters: Marin d'Eau Douce, Paris Bateau, Seine Yachting.
Why take your boat licence in Paris rather than elsewhere?
Advantages: practical training on inner Seine, it is a unique and formative setting. Bridges, barges, tourist boats: you will learn to manage dense river traffic and navigate under Pont Neuf, Pont des Arts, Pont de la Concorde. It is both technical training and a memorable memory.
Disadvantages: slightly higher rates than in the provinces (10-20% more), more limited practical slots (very demanded river platform), sometimes constraining Parisian weather (fog, floods).
