Understanding what the examiner assesses
The driving examiner assesses your ability to drive safely and independently. They observe your general road behaviour, not just manoeuvres. Communication with the examiner should be natural: answer if they speak to you, and signal doubts or hesitations without panicking.
Eliminatory errors to avoid at all costs
Crossing a solid white line
Crossing a solid white line is a serious fault that results in immediate failure. Be vigilant on bends and when overtaking.
Failing to yield priority
Failing to yield to a priority vehicle (ambulance, fire engine, police) or to a pedestrian who has stepped onto a crossing is eliminatory. Scan junctions well in advance.
Ignoring a red light or a Stop sign
Running a red light or failing to stop at a Stop sign are disqualifying faults. Even if you feel pressured by traffic behind you, do not take any risks.
Key areas to practise
Navigating roundabouts
Roundabouts often cause errors: wrong positioning, forgetting to indicate, poor priority management. Practise specifically on the roundabouts in your exam area.
Parking and parallel parking
A parking manoeuvre (parallel parking or bay parking) is requested in half of all exams. Master these manoeuvres until you can perform them without stress.
Appropriate speed
Neither too slow nor too fast: respect speed limits but maintain a smooth pace. Consistently driving at 40 km/h on a 70 km/h road can be considered unsuitable driving.
Exam day: practical advice
Get enough sleep the night before. Eat normally. Arrive 15 minutes early. Adjust your seat and mirrors before starting. If you make a mistake, do not fall apart — keep driving normally, as a single error is not eliminatory in most cases.
