Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

Which licence for an electric scooter in 2026?

The licence depends on power: under 4 kW (50cc equivalent) requires the BSR or AM licence from age 14, 4 to 11 kW (125cc equivalent) requires the A1 or B licence with 7-hour training, and above 11 kW the A2 (age 18) or A (age 20 with 2-year A2). A 6 kW scooter like the NIU NQi GTS thus requires the 125 training.

Is the BSR enough for a 50cc electric scooter?

Yes, the BSR (AM licence) is enough for an electric scooter under 4 kW limited to 45 km/h. Training lasts 8 hours (7 practical, 1 theory), costs 150 to 300 euros and is accessible from age 14. The BSR is mandatory for those born after 1988. Models concerned: NIU UQi, Super Soco CUx, Silence S01. Approved helmet and gloves mandatory under penalty of 135 euros fine.

Can you ride a 125cc electric scooter with the B licence?

Yes, but with a mandatory 7-hour training for B licence holders for 2 years minimum who never rode a 125cc before 2011. This training costs 250 to 400 euros and includes 2h theory, 2h plateau and 3h road. It applies to electric scooters from 4 to 11 kW like the BMW CE 04 or Silence S01+. Without training, the fine reaches 135 euros and 3 licence points lost.

What are the benefits of an electric scooter in 2026?

Electric scooters benefit from an ecological bonus up to 900 euros, free parking in Paris for 50cc electrics, authorised circulation in all LEZs and a usage cost 5 times lower than petrol (1 to 2 euros per 100 km). Maintenance is divided by 3 (no oil change or belt). Count 2,500 to 6,000 euros to buy a 50cc-equivalent model.
