North-East Paris: an underestimated training ground

The 19th and 20th districts together represent nearly 380,000 inhabitants, as many as some large French cities. These historically more popular districts concentrate an impressive number of driving schools (more than 40 combined establishments) and often display the most competitive prices in inner-city Paris. This is good news for tight-budget candidates.

On the pedagogical level, North-East Paris offers a great diversity of situations: fast axes (outer boulevards, porte de Pantin, porte des Lilas), narrow residential neighborhoods (Belleville, Ménilmontant), hills and sloping streets (Buttes-Chaumont, Père-Lachaise), and direct access to the ring road via La Villette, Pantin and Lilas gates.

Competitive prices of 19th-20th in 2026

20-hour package: €950 – €1,250 (i.e. €100 to €200 less than in the city center). 30-hour package: €1,450 – €1,750. Additional hour: €42 – €58. A candidate who obtains their licence in 30 hours (Paris average = 35-40h) pays on average €1,850 – €2,100 all-inclusive. This is the lowest bracket in Paris.

Beware however: the lowest prices sometimes hide problems (long exam delays, older vehicles, rotating instructors). Our recommendation is to never take the cheapest school on the street, but rather an average school with good ratings on several platforms (Google, Trustpilot, Hicomparis) and a transparent success rate.

Training neighborhoods of the 19th

Stalingrad, Jaurès, La Villette

Wide axes, heavy traffic, trams and buses in dedicated lanes: perfect for learning to share the road with public transport. Porte de la Villette offers direct access to the outer ring road to work on merging.

Buttes-Chaumont

The neighborhood around the park offers sloping streets, tight curves, complex intersections (avenue Simon Bolivar, rue des Pyrénées). It is one of the rare areas of Paris where learning the hill start is done in real situation frequently.

Porte des Lilas

Transition zone between Paris and Pré-Saint-Gervais, with a complex intersection and the ring road nearby. Ideal for end of training (intermediate to advanced level).

Training neighborhoods of the 20th

Belleville and Ménilmontant

Narrow streets, marked slope (rue de Belleville is one of the steepest in Paris), ultra-difficult parking, numerous pedestrians in the shopping area: a complete training ground to master dense urban driving.

Gambetta and Porte de Bagnolet

Place Gambetta is an important intersection with direct merging onto the ring road via Porte de Bagnolet. It is a strategic axis for candidates taking the exam at Nogent-sur-Marne.

Père-Lachaise and Alexandre Dumas

Dense residential neighborhoods ideal for working on caution (numerous schools, pedestrians, cyclists), right-of-way priorities, and perpendicular parking.

Driving schools near the Nogent exam center

For 20th candidates, the closest exam center is Nogent-sur-Marne, 15-25 minutes away. This proximity is a big advantage: less fatigue on D-day, better knowledge of the route, less stress. Some schools in the 20th (especially around Porte de Montreuil) do several lessons per week on the exact route to Nogent. This is an important criterion to ask before signing.

Aids available in North-East Paris

The 19th and 20th districts have populations eligible for many aids: €1,000 Île-de-France licence cheque, youth cheque from the Regional Council, local missions aids (up to €1,500 in some cases), personal training account (€500). By accumulating these aids, the remaining cost can drop to €500 – €800, which makes the licence accessible even with a very limited budget.

DevisPermis.fr supports you in assembling your aid file. We identify the aids you are entitled to and check that the chosen driving school accepts them (not all do). It is often the key to smooth financing without unpleasant surprise.
