What is a non-profit driving school?

A non-profit driving school (AEA in France) is a non-profit entity approved by the prefecture to train for the licence. It targets socially or economically vulnerable groups: under-26s out of employment, RSA recipients, professional reinsertion, priority urban districts (QPV).

How much is the licence via an AEA?

Between €400 and €900 for a full B licence, vs €1,600–2,500 in a classic school. A 60–75% reduction made possible by: public subsidies, direct OPCO or regional funding, tax exemption (1901 Act), partial volunteering, partnerships with France Travail and local missions.

Who can benefit?

Classic social criteria

RSA, ASS, AAH, ARE recipients, young people in local missions, CROUS-bursary students at tiers 5–7, refugees, people with disabilities, QPV residents. Criteria vary by association.

Referral from a partner organisation

Access often goes through a referral: CCAS, Local Mission, France Travail, SIAE (reinsertion structures), neighbourhood centres.

Major associations in France

Permis pour Tous network

Over 100 AEA structures across France, federated under Permis pour Tous. Structured training, social support, mobility-to-employment actions.

Voiture & Co

Pioneer association created in 1994, based in Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Specialises in 16–25 year-olds out of school or in reinsertion.

Other regional actors

Avie (Nantes), Mobilex (Burgundy), AFMP (Paris 20), Auto-école sociale Toulouse, etc. Complete list on the Fédération des associations de permis pour tous website.

Quality of teaching: just as good?

AEA pass rates are comparable or higher than the national average (55–65% on first attempt). Why? Because structures support well beyond the licence: theory support, literacy help, psychological support, one-on-one sessions. Average length: 6–12 months vs 4–8 months at a classic school.

Limitations to know

Longer delays

Slots are limited (subsidies) and waitlists can reach 3–9 months. Don't leave it to the last minute.

Social commitment

Some associations request a participation commitment (volunteering, occasional help, info meetings). Often enriching, but know about it.

Limited geographic areas

AEAs are mainly in urban and suburban areas. In rural zones, the offer is often absent.

How to register

1. Identify eligibility (contact Local Mission, CCAS, or France Travail). 2. Get a written referral from the partner organisation. 3. Contact the nearest association (list on the prefecture website). 4. Welcome interview (30 min). 5. Sign the contract, training starts.
