Learning to drive with a supervisor is a popular option in France. Two formats exist: early supervised learning (AAC) which can start at 15, and supervised driving (CS) available from 18 after passing the theory test. In 2026, rules have evolved little but the new Category B reform clarified some points. Choosing between the two is not trivial: duration, cost, mileage and even the age of getting your full licence differ. Here is a clear comparison to decide.

AAC: start early, finish more safely

Early supervised learning is for candidates from age 15. After passing the theory test and at least 20 hours of driving school instruction, the learner enters the supervised phase: at least 1 year and 3 000 kilometres with a supervisor. They can then take the practical test from age 17. This format is linked to a better pass rate (about 75 percent versus 60 percent on the standard track per official figures) and better road safety in the first years.

Key AAC benefits

AAC offers a reduced 2 year probation instead of 3, and an initial capital of 6 points that climbs to 9 and 12 faster. The young driver insurance premium is also lower with most insurers. Pedagogically, the candidate gains progressive experience, varies conditions (night, rain, motorway, city) and corrects flaws before the test. It is the most comprehensive format, but requires long term commitment.

Supervised driving: the post-18 solution

Supervised driving is for candidates already enrolled in the standard track who wish to extend their learning. It can be chosen after a practical test failure, or from the start instead of traditional training. No specific age minimum beyond 18, no required mileage, no minimum duration. The candidate must have passed the theory and at least 20 hours of driving. It is more flexible but lacks the AAC benefits in probation or insurance.

When to choose supervised driving

Supervised driving is ideal after a practical test failure: it lets you keep driving with a supervisor without paying for a full new course. It also suits adult candidates passing their licence late who want to firm up experience before the test. Cost is lower than AAC since no mandatory teaching meetings apply. However it does not unlock AAC bonuses.

Numerical comparison of the two formats

AAC: min age 15, test possible at 17, min duration 1 year, min mileage 3 000 km, 2 mandatory teaching meetings (with instructor and supervisor), 2 year probation, average total cost 1 500 to 1 800 euros. Supervised driving: min age 18, no required duration but 1 000 km recommended, no mandatory teaching meeting, 3 year probation, cost 1 100 to 1 400 euros. CS is faster and cheaper, but AAC is more beneficial long term.

Who can be a supervisor

For both formats, the supervisor must hold a Category B licence for at least 5 years without interruption (cancellation or invalidation), and get insurer approval. They must hold a certificate, usually provided by the driving school. The supervisor can be a parent, relative or friend. Multiple supervisors are allowed. Beware: driving without a valid supervisor is an offence, and insurance can deny coverage in case of accident. Declaration to the insurer is free.

Real cost and pass rate

Cost depends on the school and region. In 2026, expect around 1 500 euros for a full AAC package, 1 200 euros for CS after failure. First attempt pass rate is higher in AAC (around 75 percent) than on the traditional track (60 percent) according to Road Safety. CS also brings a pass gain but smaller. Long term, AAC drivers have fewer accidents in the first years, which justifies the initial investment.

How to choose by your profile

You are 15-16 and eager to drive fast: pick AAC, you will be autonomous at 17 with reduced probation. You are over 18, already have theory, and are in a hurry: supervised driving fits better. You failed the test and lost confidence: CS to gain mileage before a new attempt. You have a tight budget: CS costs less on average. In any case, discuss it with your school to align with your plan.
