AAC in Paris: a paradox to solve
Accompanied driving (AAC) remains the best path to pass the licence: 74% success (vs 58%), fewer hours needed, young driver insurance rate halved for 3 years. But in Paris, a major obstacle stands: 60% of Parisian households do not have a car. Without a family vehicle, how to do the mandatory 3,000 km of AAC?
Good news: since 2023, several solutions have emerged to lift this obstacle. Long-term rental at youth rate, provision by associations, driving school-rental partnerships, nearby family vehicles. In 2026, being Parisian without a car is no longer a condemnation to give up AAC.
Reminder: how does AAC work in 2026
AAC is open from age 15. After initial training at a driving school (20 hours minimum, code obtained), the candidate can drive with an accompanier holding a B licence for at least 5 years, without suspension. The accompanied phase lasts at least 12 months and must include at least 3,000 km traveled. Three mandatory pedagogical appointments are planned (1,000, 2,000, 3,000 km) with an instructor.
The practical exam can be taken from age 17 (against 18 in classic training). Advantages: accumulating 12 to 18 months of experience before the licence, gaining confidence (reflexes, stress management), benefiting from the young driver insurance bonus.
Solution 1: AAC-specific long-term rental
Specialized players have developed in Paris since 2023. Renault Mobilize, Ayvens (formerly ALD Automotive), and several start-ups offer monthly rentals at €150-280 incl. VAT including AAC insurance. These offers are designed to accompany the AAC phase: recent car, insurance including the novice driver, possibility to return the vehicle after 12-18 months.
AAC budget over 12 months via dedicated rental: €1,800 to €3,360 rental + €600 to €900 fuel = €2,400 to €4,260. Add to this the cost of initial training (€1,200 on average). Total AAC Paris: €3,600 to €5,460. More expensive than classic training but amortizable by insurance savings over 3 years.
Solution 2: provision by extended family or friends
If you have a relative (parent, uncle, grandparent, close family friend) living in Paris suburbs and with a vehicle, it is often the best economic solution. You must add the child to the vehicle AAC insurance (average surcharge: €20-45 per month), and organize for regular sessions (weekends, holidays).
This solution limits access to the vehicle (generally 1 session per week) but remains the least costly: €240 to €540 insurance over 12 months. The 3,000 km are reached but progression is slower than in dedicated rental.
Solution 3: car-sharing and driving school with dedicated AAC vehicle
Since 2024, a handful of Parisian driving schools (mainly in the 11th, 12th, 19th, 20th) offer a « turnkey » AAC service: they provide a vehicle for AAC sessions, with an accompanier trained by the school. Rate: €25 to €35 per session (2-3 hours). Over 12 months, count 60 sessions = €1,500 to €2,100.
The advantage: no administrative management, no personal insurance to take out, qualified accompanier. The disadvantage: less flexibility (you have to book), and it looks more like a spread-out classic licence than a real family AAC.
Solution 4: extended initial training + classic licence
Alternative option for Parisians without vehicle solution: give up AAC but extend initial training to 40-50 hours (instead of 20), over 6 to 9 months. The candidate progresses gradually as in AAC, but without the 3,000 km. Budget: €2,500 to €3,200 (more expensive than classic training but less than rental AAC). Observed success rate: 68% (lower than the 74% of classic AAC but higher than the 58% of short classic licence).
Choosing an accompanier in Paris
The accompanier must have the B licence for 5 years minimum (without interruption), without withdrawal, and be declared to insurance. In Paris, look for someone who drives regularly (not an occasional driver) and who accepts the constraints: availability, pedagogy, patience. An accompanier who only drives weekends in Paris will not easily do 3,000 km in 12 months.
Strategies to reach 3,000 km from Paris
At 45 km/h average in Île-de-France, 3,000 km = about 67 hours of driving. Over 12 months, that is 5h30 per month, or about 1h30 per weekend. Ideal distribution: short weekends in Normandy or Picardy (200-400 km each), long summer trip (motorway, 800-1,000 km), some round trips to the provinces (family, holidays), very occasional daily use (not profitable in km but essential for urban experience).
Mandatory pedagogical appointments
At 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 km, the candidate must make an appointment with a driving school instructor. Duration: 2-3 hours. Objective: evaluate progression, correct bad habits taken, orient to new difficulties. Rate included in initial AAC package. Do not skip them: they condition AAC validation and prepare for the exam.
