What is accompanied driving (AAC)?
Accompanied Driving (AAC - Apprentissage Anticipé de la Conduite) is a scheme that allows young people to start learning to drive from the age of 15. The aim is to expose them to more real driving situations before the exam, which significantly improves the pass rate.
Who can do accompanied driving?
To enrol in accompanied driving, you must be at least 15 years old. The supervising adult (parent, guardian or close relative) must have held a driving licence for at least 5 years, must not be under a driving ban, and must not have committed certain serious traffic offences.
The steps of accompanied driving
Step 1: Initial phase at a driving school
Training must begin at an approved driving school. This phase includes an initial assessment, at least 20 hours of driving with a professional instructor, and road safety awareness sessions. Once this phase is validated, you and your supervising adult sign an agreement with the school.
Step 2: Supervised driving phase
This is the longest and most formative phase. You must cover a minimum of 3,000 km with your supervising adult over at least 1 year. Logbooks are used to document progress and the types of situations encountered.
Step 3: Mid-course assessment
Halfway through (generally between 1,000 and 3,000 km), you complete a 2-hour tutorial session with a driving instructor to assess your progress and correct weak points.
Step 4: The exam
After your 18th birthday and a final assessment by your driving school, you sit the driving exam under the same conditions as any other candidate.
The advantages of accompanied driving
The pass rate for AAC candidates is 15 to 20 points higher than the national average. Moreover, after obtaining the licence, the probationary period is shorter (2 years instead of 3) and young AAC drivers benefit from significant reductions on their car insurance.
