Why choose accompanied driving in 2026?

Accompanied driving (AAC — Apprentissage Anticipé de la Conduite) is unquestionably the most effective method of getting a driving licence in France. In 2026, the statistics are clear: 72% pass rate on the first attempt versus 55% on the standard route. The probationary period is reduced to 2 years (versus 3). And insurers often offer reductions of 10 to 20% to AAC young drivers.

Who can do accompanied driving?

Accompanied driving is accessible from age 15. The supervising adult must have held a car licence for at least 5 years, must not have had a suspension in the last 5 years, and must own a roadworthy vehicle. The supervisor must also be registered with the driving school.

The AAC phases

Phase 1 — Initial driving school training: at least 20 hours with an approved instructor, plus the theory test if not already valid. This phase ends with an assessment that authorises moving to phase 2. Phase 2 — Accompanied driving: minimum 3,000 km with the designated supervisor over at least 1 year. A 1-hour tutorial session with the instructor is mandatory between 3,000 and 5,000 km. Phase 3 — Exam: from age 17 years and 5 months, sit the practical exam.

The cost of AAC in 2026

AAC training costs between €1,900 and €2,600 in total, including 20+ hours at the driving school, NEPH file fees, theory test, tutorial sessions and exam fees. It appears more expensive than the standard route, but the higher pass rate often reduces the number of attempts needed.

Preparing the supervising adult

The supervisor plays a crucial role. They must avoid unnecessary interventions, remain calm, and not give instructions that contradict those of the instructor. A sensitivity session for supervisors is offered by most schools (2–3 hours, often free or included). It is strongly recommended.

AAC vs standard route: what is the verdict in 2026?

AAC is recommended if the student is 15–16 with time ahead, if parents or relatives can supervise regularly, and if the goal is a 'clean' licence on the first attempt. The standard route is more suitable for adults without an available supervisor or those who need their licence quickly.
