What is the probationary period?

The probationary period is the learning phase that follows obtaining a driving licence. It lasts 3 years for the standard route and 2 years for drivers who completed accompanied driving (AAC). During this period, the licence carries only 6 points (compared to 12 for a full licence).

Special rules during the probationary period

Reduced alcohol limit

The maximum permitted blood alcohol level for drivers in their probationary period is 0.2 g/L (or 0.1 mg/L of exhaled air), compared to 0.5 g/L for non-probationary drivers. In practice this means zero tolerance: even a single glass of wine can push you over this limit.

Reduced speed limits

On motorways, the maximum speed is 110 km/h (instead of 130 km/h) during the probationary period. On dual carriageways, the limit is 100 km/h instead of 110. On other two-way roads, normal limits apply.

How to earn points on a probationary licence?

The 6-point balance increases automatically if no points-deducting offences are committed: +2 points per year for the first 2 years without an offence, +3 points in the 3rd year. After 3 years without an offence, the licence is full (12 points). Accompanied driving shortens this period to 2 years.

Points deducted during the probationary period

Offences are more penalising during the probationary period because the starting balance is lower. A major speeding offence (6 points deducted) can alone invalidate a probationary licence. Be particularly careful during these first years.

Motorway accompaniment

During the 3 months following the test (or 1 year in the Paris region), it is strongly recommended to complete at least 2 hours of motorway driving accompanied by an experienced driver. Some schools offer post-licence packages for this phase.
