Place de l'Étoile in Paris: how to approach this roundabout on the 2026 driving test

Place Charles-de-Gaulle - formerly place de l'Étoile - is one of the world's most famous and feared roundabouts. 12 avenues converge around the Arc de Triomphe, including Champs-Élysées and avenue de la Grande Armée. Its major particularity: it still works with right-hand priority (for those entering), a French exception making it particularly intimidating for licence candidates. Here is how to approach it in 2026.

Étoile right-hand priority rule

Unlike classic roundabouts (priority to those already engaged), place de l'Étoile keeps right-hand priority. Concretely: a driver already on the square must yield to someone arriving from an avenue. This historic rule makes circulation more chaotic than a normal gyratory: vehicles zigzag between the 5 lanes without apparent logical order.

Why this rule persists

The square hosts 50,000 vehicles per day. A classic gyratory passage (priority to engaged) would create massive entry jams. Right-hand priority forces continuous flow that, paradoxically, fluidifies traffic. In return, accidents are numerous: around 200 minor collisions per year, fortunately most uninjured thanks to low speeds (15-25 km/h on average).

Is the Étoile assessed in the exam?

Place de l'Étoile is rarely included in exam routes due to its complexity. Paris exam centres (Daumesnil, Maine, Argenteuil) generally avoid this exercise to not trap candidates. However, in about 15% of 17th-8th routes, the Étoile can be crossed. Knowing how to handle it is therefore a plus.

Possible oral questions

More frequently than practical assessment, the Étoile appears in oral verification questions at exam start: « What is the priority rule on place de l'Étoile? », « How to approach this type of roundabout? ». Answers must be precise: right-hand priority, exit indicator, maximum vigilance.

Technique for safe Étoile crossing

Six essential rules to succeed in your crossing:

1. Count the avenues

The Étoile has 12 avenues. It is essential to know your exit in advance (e.g.: 7th avenue from the Champs entrance). Google Maps reconnaissance before the exam can help. In the cabin, keep an eye on exit signs as you turn.

2. Position quickly

From entry, position yourself in the lane matching your exit: outer (lane 1) for a near exit, inner (lane 4 or 5) for a distant exit. Late lane changes are the main accident factor.

3. Let the entrants pass

Systematically slow down at the 12 entrances to let vehicles arriving from the avenues in. Never accelerate to « cut off » an entrant: it is dangerous and against the rule.

4. Mandatory exit indicator

Signal right 50 metres before the planned exit. If you miss your exit, continue without catching up in panic: do an extra full lap and come back.

5. Speed between 15 and 25 km/h

Natural Étoile speed is 15-25 km/h. Above, you lose priority control. Below, you block flow and stress other drivers.

6. 360° eye scan

The Étoile demands constant visual vigilance: ahead (for entrants), behind (for overtakers), sideways (for lane changes). It is the most demanding visual-control exercise of the licence.

Training: dedicated Étoile lessons

Several 8th, 16th and 17th-district schools offer specific « Étoile Crossing » lessons (2-3 hours) allowing 5-6 consecutive real-condition crossings, passenger then driver side, with debrief after each. An investment (approximately €180-240) that turns apprehension into confidence.
