Redesigned in 2013, Place de la République became the largest pedestrian zone in central Paris (28,000 m²). This redesign transformed car circulation: flow is no longer circular but linear and asymmetric. For a B candidate passing by, the challenge is grasping the new logic and avoiding frequent conflicts with bikes and pedestrians. This guide details the 2026 layout and examiner expectations.

New République layout

Since 2013, the square is no longer a roundabout. The centre is fully pedestrianised, hosting the Marianne statue and a kiosk. Cars drive on two asymmetric peripheral lanes: the north lane (boulevard Saint-Martin / Magenta) is two-way, the south lane (boulevard du Temple / Voltaire) is one-way east-west. Cars can no longer circle the square.

Key axes to know

Five boulevards meet the square: avenue de la République (11th, east), boulevard du Temple (3rd, south), boulevard Saint-Martin (10th, west), boulevard Magenta (10th, northwest), rue du Faubourg-du-Temple (10th, northeast). Crossing the square means bypassing the pedestrian centre via the north or south lane. Understanding this one-way logic is the first challenge.

Priorities and specific rules

There is no roundabout: classic traffic lights regulate all square junctions. Priorities are therefore indicated by lights and signs. Pedestrians have absolute priority on marked crossings, especially those linking the two lanes to the pedestrian centre. Cyclists have a bi-directional path south.

The bi-directional cycle path

Boulevard Voltaire, accessible from the square, has a two-way cycle path. That means a cyclist can arrive from the opposite direction of car traffic. Before turning right onto the path, check both directions. Examiners test this specific blind spot almost every République crossing.

Frequent exam pitfalls

Five mistakes recur per instructors and examiners. 1) Trying to circle the square (one-way, eliminatory). 2) Not yielding to bikes from the opposite direction on the bi-directional path. 3) Running a late amber (pedestrian conflict at centre). 4) Harsh braking near crossings (rear-end collision risk). 5) Forgetting indicators when switching boulevards.

Watch out for scooters and free bikes

Place de la République hosts a large fleet of Lime, Dott bikes and rental scooters. Users, often novices, may zigzag. Keep 1.50 m lateral distance when overtaking. A dangerous brush can trigger an eliminatory grade for « endangering a vulnerable user ».

Examiner-validated best practices

Three instructions to apply systematically. First, decelerate 50 metres before the square to visually scan pedestrians, bikes, scooters. Second, strictly obey lights even if the junction seems clear (automatic cameras enforce). Third, early positioning: if you must turn right 100 m later, take the right lane right after leaving the square.

Speed on the square

The entire square is limited to 30 km/h. Driving at 40 or 50 km/h carries a 3-5 point penalty. Conversely, driving 15-20 km/h unnecessarily is also penalised (too slow). Keep a smooth steady pace around 25-30 km/h.

Practising République before the exam

3rd, 10th and 11th district schools usually include 1-2 hours at République in their package. Ask for at least one peak-hour attempt (6-7 pm) to test stress management, and one weekend attempt to understand bike paths. These 2 targeted hours can be decisive.
