Place de la Bastille is one of the most complex junctions in Paris. Classified as a light-regulated roundabout since the 2020 redesign, it combines 8 entries/exits, 3 lanes, a bi-directional cycle path, a bus lane and a nearby tourist tram. For a B licence candidate in Paris, correctly negotiating Bastille is often proof they master dense urban driving. This guide decodes its pitfalls and examiner-validated techniques.

Current layout of the square

After the 2019-2020 works led by the City of Paris, Bastille became a « garden square » with a large pedestrian zone in the centre. Car traffic flows on a 3-lane outer belt. Vehicles already inside the square have priority: it is a classic roundabout, unlike most European junctions. Entries are regulated by traffic lights during peak hours.

The 8 main accesses

Going clockwise from the north: rue de la Roquette (11th), boulevard Beaumarchais (3rd), rue Saint-Antoine (4th), rue de Lyon (12th), boulevard de la Bastille (12th), boulevard Richard-Lenoir (11th), boulevard Henri-IV (4th), rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine (11th). Identifying your exit ahead is key: the examiner's verbal instruction often comes 50 metres before the access.

Priority rules at Bastille

The rule is simple: vehicles already on the roundabout have priority. To enter, you must give way (« Give way » AB25 sign). To exit, turn on your right indicator as soon as you pass the exit preceding yours. To continue, no indicator. For a 2-lane roundabout, use the right lane if exiting within 180°, the left lane if going more than half the square.

Traffic lights at peak hour

Between 7.30-9.30 am and 5-7.30 pm, 4 of the 8 entries are regulated by lights to ease traffic. A red light stops you on the stop line, never in the roundabout. At green, merge while giving way to vehicles already on the square. Examiners systematically test this merge during peak hours.

The 5 classic mistakes at Bastille

According to feedback from Paris-Daumesnil and Paris-Maine centres which examine candidates from neighbouring districts: 1) Entering without giving way (eliminatory fault). 2) Forgetting the right indicator on exit (2 penalty points). 3) Staying in the left lane when the exit is near (1 to 2 points). 4) Braking harshly out of fear of traffic (risk of rear-end collision). 5) Missing the exit and going round again (pulls overall grade down).

Anticipating the exit

The examiner's instruction usually arrives 100 metres before entering the square: « Take the 3rd exit. » Count exits starting with the one just after your entry. The 1st exit is the one immediately right after entry. A helpful landmark: rue Saint-Antoine is the 2nd exit if coming from boulevard Beaumarchais.

Technique: position, speed, gaze

Three technical principles to apply. Position: take the outer lane (right) if exiting within 180°; inner lane otherwise. Speed: 25-30 km/h in the roundabout, no more. Gaze: scan the 3 adjacent lanes before any lane change. Use the right side mirror and check the blind spot before exiting.

Pass through Bastille at least 4 times with your instructor before the exam: once early morning (low traffic, to grasp layout), once at 6.30 pm peak (extreme conditions), once Saturday afternoon (tourist flow), once Sunday (relative calm). This progressive exposure demystifies the square.

Exam day at Bastille: mental checklist

Just before arriving, mentally repeat 4 actions: right indicator from the second-to-last exit, right blind-spot check, smooth deceleration, clean exit. If you miss the exit, do not panic: go round staying right, exit on the next attempt. The examiner penalises a sudden lane change more than an extra loop.
