What is the PPL aircraft licence?

The PPL (Private Pilot Licence) is the private pilot licence for aeroplanes. It allows you to fly a single-engine motor aircraft in normal weather conditions (VMC - Visual Meteorological Conditions), across Europe and in many countries worldwide. It is the basic licence for any amateur pilot wishing to fly independently.

Conditions for obtaining the PPL

To take the PPL, you must be at least 17 years old, speak and understand aeronautical English (minimum ICAO level 4), and be declared medically fit by a class 2 approved medical examiner. No prior aeronautical experience is required.

Theory training

9 subjects in the programme

PPL theory training covers 9 disciplines: air law, airfield operating procedures, flight performance and planning, human performance, meteorology, navigation, communications, principles of flight, and aircraft knowledge. Preparation takes 3 to 6 months depending on your study pace.

Theory exams

Exams are taken online on the DGAC (Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile) website. Each subject is assessed separately. You need 75% correct answers to pass each module.

Practical training

Mandatory flight hours

The PPL requires a minimum of 45 flight hours, including 25 hours of dual instruction (with an instructor) and 10 hours of solo flying. These 45 hours include cross-country navigation, night flights and simulator hours.

The long-distance solo flight

One of the highlights of PPL training is the first long-distance solo cross-country flight: you fly alone, covering at least 270 km, with two landings at aerodromes different from your home base.

What does the PPL licence cost?

The PPL is a significant investment: expect between €10,000 and €15,000 depending on the flying club or flight school, the region and the number of hours needed. Flying clubs (non-profit associations) often offer more accessible rates than commercial schools.

Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

What is the PPL airplane licence?

The PPL (Private Pilot Licence) is the European private pilot licence delivered by DGAC in France. It allows piloting single-engine aircraft up to 5.7 tonnes in VFR by day, worldwide, without compensation. Accessible from age 17, it requires 45 minimum flight hours and 9 theory exams. This licence is the base of any civil aeronautical career in France.

How long is PPL training?

The PPL requires 45 minimum flight hours including 25 dual-command hours and 10 solo flight hours (including 5h navigation and a 270 km triangle flight). Theory training covers 9 subjects (meteorology, navigation, flight mechanics). Average duration is 12 to 24 months at flying club, or 4 to 6 months in intensive training. Tip: practice 2 to 3 hours per week without interruption.

How much does the airplane PPL cost in 2025?

The PPL costs between 9,000 and 14,000 euros in France in 2025, depending on the flying club and aircraft used. Average hourly rate is 180 to 250 euros for a DR400-type aircraft. The package includes instructor hours (60 to 90 euros/h extra), theory (500 to 1,000 euros), DGAC exams (350 euros) and class 2 medical (150 euros).

What tips to pass the airplane PPL?

Choose a nearby flying club (under 30 minutes) to multiply sessions. Spread theory over 6 months alongside flying, with 30 minutes of daily revision. Pass the class 2 medical (DGAC) before the first flight to avoid surprises. Tip: aim for solo release by hour 12 of flight, it's the pivot that unlocks rapid progress afterwards.
