Average price of the licence in Paris in 2026: official figures

In 2026, obtaining the B licence in Paris costs on average €2,287 according to the latest Road Prevention Association survey (March 2026). This amount represents the all-inclusive cost: registration, 20-hour package, real additional hours, code, file fees and exam presentations. This figure is 18% higher than the national average (€1,936) and is explained by several specifically Parisian factors.

First factor: Paris is the city where the volume of hours required is the highest. The national average is 30 hours of practice. In Paris, it climbs to 38 hours. This represents 8 additional hours at an average of €50, or €400 more. Second factor: the hourly cost of driving is higher (gap of €5 to €12 per hour with the provinces). Third factor: Parisian success rate being lower, 35% of candidates must retake the exam, which costs on average €280 additional.

Budget breakdown: where does every euro go?

The initial package (45% of budget)

The classic 20-hour code + driving package in Paris costs on average €1,090 (range: €950 – €1,390). This package generally includes: administrative registration (€50-80), code online or in class (€200-300), 20 hours of driving (€750-900), 1 to 2 exam presentations.

Additional hours (35% of budget)

This is the most unpredictable expense item. At €50 per hour and with a Paris average of 38 total hours, a candidate pays on average €900 in additional hours on top of the package. Some candidates, especially those who have never driven or are afraid behind the wheel, can reach 50-60 hours, or €1,500 to €2,000 additional.

Exam fees (10% of budget)

Practical exam presentation: €0 to €150 depending on the school (some premium packages include it). Retake after failure: €150 to €300. The code (theoretical exam): €30 at an approved La Poste center. Expect on average €230 of exam fees over the entire journey.

Extras (10% of budget)

Registration card, ANTS fees, ID photos, possible dual-control vehicle rental for free candidate, optional refresher courses. Count €200 to €300.

Gaps by district in 2026

Our surveys from March 2026 on 120 Parisian driving schools give a clear range by district. Cheapest districts: 18th, 19th, 20th (€1,850 – €2,100 median total budget). Median districts: 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th (€2,100 – €2,350). Most expensive districts: 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 16th (€2,400 – €2,800). The gap between the 19th and the 7th is about €600 for equivalent training, or 25%.

Why such gaps?

Three main factors explain the gaps: the cost of premises (Parisian commercial rent varying from €300 to €1,500 per m² per year), price positioning (some schools target wealthy clientele), and the service offered (recent vehicles, experienced instructors, administrative follow-up included). The highest price is not always synonymous with the best quality: our survey reveals that several schools in the 6th and 8th display success rates lower than some schools in the 19th. The quality/price ratio must therefore be evaluated school by school.

Licence budget according to your profile

Youth 17-18 with AAC

Thanks to AAC, reduced average of additional hours, 74% success rate. Average total budget: €1,650 – €1,950.

Adult 25-40 in classic training

Often little time to devote (2 lessons per week max), so spread out and sometimes need for additional hours to consolidate. Average total budget: €2,300 – €2,650.

Adult resuming after previous failure(s)

Need to restart from scratch on certain notions. Plan a more realistic 30-hour package. Average total budget: €2,450 – €2,900.

Intensive training over 2-3 weeks

Often offered as full board in Paris (with accommodation), rates climb to €3,200 – €4,500. But the success rate is excellent (80% on average) and the speed is unbeatable.

Aids that can drastically reduce your budget

In 2026, a Parisian can accumulate: Île-de-France licence cheque (€1,000), CPF (up to €500), employer aid (variable), local mission aid (up to €1,500 for 16-25 year-olds in integration), licence at €1 per day (zero-rate loan from €600 to €1,200). A candidate eligible for 2-3 of these aids can see their remaining cost drop to €500 – €1,000, or 75 to 80% coverage.

How to optimize your budget without sacrificing quality

Three major levers: compare 3 to 5 schools before signing (average saving: €350), take the code online rather than at school (saving: €200-300), choose a school with a high success rate to avoid retaking (saving: €200-300). By combining these three levers, you save between €750 and €950 on an average budget of €2,300, or up to 40% reduction.
