The practical test marking grid
The practical car licence test is assessed on a standardised grid of 32 competencies. These are grouped into 6 categories: vehicle control, compliance with rules and signals, observation, manoeuvres, attitude towards other road users, and eco-responsible behaviour (added in 2026). An overall result is given: favourable (pass) or unfavourable (fail).
Eliminatory errors
Some errors automatically result in failure, regardless of how well the rest of the test went: not stopping at a red light, failing to give way to a pedestrian on a crossing, a dangerous manoeuvre, speeding by 10 km/h or more, use of a phone detected, not wearing a seatbelt. These errors are noted as 'EL' (eliminatory) on the marking grid.
Major insufficiencies
Beyond eliminatory errors, an accumulation of insufficiencies can cause failure. A major insufficiency (MI) on a key point (blind spot, positioning, inappropriate speed) is very penalising. Three simple insufficiencies generally equate to one major insufficiency in the examiner's overall assessment.
What is new in the 2026 exam
In 2026, the examiner also assesses the candidate's eco-responsible behaviour: anticipating deceleration, maintaining a steady pace, switching off the engine during prolonged stops, using engine braking appropriately. This assessment is optional in the overall marking but can make the difference between two otherwise equal candidates.
The manoeuvre
A manoeuvre is compulsory during the exam (U-turn, parallel parking, bay parking). The candidate does not know in advance which one will be requested. In 2026, parallel parking may be requested as a forward manoeuvre at some exam sites. Demonstrating double-parking exit (pulling out of a bay) is increasingly frequently tested.
Exam duration and route
The exam lasts 35 to 40 minutes and takes place on a route not determined in advance within the town of the exam centre. The candidate may be tested on a motorway (access only), national road, urban streets and 30 km/h zones. The presence of the instructor in the cabin is always permitted but without intervention.
Tips to pass first time
Complete at least 20 validated hours with your instructor + extra hours with a supervisor if possible. Debrief systematically with your instructor after each lesson. Do a 'white run' simulating the exam before the date. On the day: rest well, do not change your driving habits, and above all do not rush manoeuvres.
