GVW: the key to the motorhome licence

Contrary to popular belief, length or width change nothing: it is the GVW that decides which licence you need to drive a motorhome in France.

Motorhome ≤ 3.5 tonnes: B licence

The most common category

95% of new motorhomes sold in France are limited to 3,500 kg GVW to stay accessible with a B licence. Models like Chausson, Adria, Dethleffs, Rapido — A-class, low-profile or overcab — are kept in this category by industrial design.

The overloading trap

A 3.5-tonne motorhome often has less than 400 kg of real payload. Two adults, full tanks and bikes on the rear can already tip the scales. Fine: €135 on first weigh, 3 points off, up to €1,500 depending on excess.

Motorhome between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes: C1 licence

Who needs it?

The C1 (created in 2013) targets vehicles of 3,500 to 7,500 kg GVW. It applies to large A-class "liners" (Concorde, Frankia, Phoenix), imported American motorhomes, or long-wheelbase Fiat Ducato builds.

Training and price

C1 requires the B licence, minimum age 21, a medical visit, professional theory and 35 hours of training at an approved school. Count €1,800 to €3,000. C1E (+ trailer) is available as a complement.

Taking your C1 for a motorhome

If your C1 is only for private use, FIMO is NOT required (FIMO applies to professional drivers only). Great news for retirees wanting a 5-tonne motorhome.

Seniors and motorhomes: the specific case

Many new retirees dream of a large motorhome. In 2026, you must redo the medical every 5 years from age 60 for a C1/C, and every 2 years after 70. Plan accordingly.

Tips to avoid mistakes

Check the registration document

GVW appears in box F.2 of the motorhome registration. If F.2 = 3,500 kg, B licence is enough. If F.2 > 3,500 kg, C1 is mandatory.

Manufacturer plates vs real GVW

Some motorhomes are administratively capped at 3,500 kg but can be reclassified to 4,400 kg or more by the manufacturer (often for a few hundred euros). More payload — but C1 then required.
