Driving in the UK after Brexit: what really changed in 2026

Driving in the UK in 2026: French licence valid 12 months, left-side driving, London ULEZ, insurance, tolls. The post-Brexit practical guide.

Voiture roulant a gauche dans rue de Londres typique

Brexit shook many things up for French drivers wishing to drive in the United Kingdom. Six years after separation, some rules have stabilised, others remain unclear. Between French licence validity, left-side driving, London's low-emission zones and discreet tolls, here is what every French driver should know before taking the wheel across the Channel in 2026.

French licence validity in the UK

12 months for a tourist stay

The French licence stays valid in the UK for 12 months for tourist stays. No International Driving Permit needed, no special procedure. Beyond 12 months, or if you settle in the UK with tax residency, you must exchange your French licence for a British one through the DVLA.

This exchange is free and done by post, but the lead time can reach 3 weeks. During the exchange, you may continue to drive with your French licence. Once exchanged, your French licence is kept by the DVLA and sent back to France: you cannot easily reverse the process.

The case of students and posted workers

Students on Erasmus programmes or in internships under one year may drive with their French licence with no formality. Posted workers must check their tax status: if their company declares them as British residents, the exchange becomes mandatory after one year.

Left-side driving, the big trap

The roundabout, public enemy number one

Left-side driving is not that hard in a straight line: you get used to it in a few hours. The real danger is the roundabout, taken clockwise in the UK. Many French drivers lose their bearings, take the wrong exit, or worse drive into oncoming traffic. Be especially careful in complex multi-lane roundabouts, common around London and Birmingham.

A proven trick: mentally repeat keep left at each start. After a motorway stop, in a car park or after a petrol station, that is when the instinct to revert to right kicks in. Also watch out for the very narrow country roads in Cornwall or Wales, where passing often means reversing.

London ULEZ and low-emission zones

25 pounds a day to drive in London

The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) has covered the entire Greater London area since 2023, meaning nearly all of inner London. Pre-Euro 6 diesel vehicles (roughly pre-2015) and pre-Euro 4 petrol vehicles (pre-2006) must pay 12.50 pounds per day, plus the central Congestion Charge at 15 pounds. Without payment, the automatic fine is 180 pounds.

Payment is done online on the Transport for London website or via an app. Modern rental vehicles (under 5 years old) are usually compliant, but check with the rental company. Edinburgh has also applied a low-emission zone since 2024, stricter: check compliance before entering.

Insurance, tolls and other traps

Does your French insurance really cover you?

Since Brexit, your green card insurance is no longer implicit: even though most French insurers still cover the UK, check before leaving. Request written confirmation. If you rent on the spot, rental insurance applies, but read exclusions and deductibles carefully.

On tolls, the UK is mostly free, with a few notable exceptions: the M6 Toll north of Birmingham (about 8 pounds for cars), the Dartford Crossing (QEII Bridge near London, 2.50 pounds to pay online within 24 hours), the Severn Bridge between England and Wales became free in 2018. The Edinburgh LEZ is a low-emission zone, not a toll, but entering without payment costs a lot.

Practical recap before leaving

The traveller's checklist

Check your car insurance coverage in the UK and request written confirmation. If you travel in your own vehicle, verify ULEZ compliance before entering London or register the vehicle online. If you rent on the spot, choose a recent automatically compliant vehicle. Download the Transport for London app to manage urban tolls. And mentally rehearse left-side driving in the days before.

On driving, keep a greater safety distance than in France, especially on motorways limited to 70 mph (about 112 km/h). Indicators and merges are strictly respected, but traffic can be very dense, particularly in the southeast and around major cities.

DevisPermis expert opinion

The UK remains an accessible destination for French drivers, but it is also where French people make the most mistakes: roundabouts taken the wrong way, 180-pound ULEZ fines received 6 weeks after return, invalid insurance. Our advice: if you are an inexperienced or anxious driver, consider taking regional trains or hiring a private driver for major urban routes. For rural Southwest or Scotland roads, the car remains essential, but prepare your route well in advance.

Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

Can you drive in the UK with a French licence in 2026?

Yes, the French licence remains valid in the UK for stays of less than 12 months in 2026, without formalities. Beyond, it must be exchanged for a British licence (DVLA) or retaken. The post-Brexit agreement guarantees recognition until further notice. The green card is no longer mandatory since 2021 for car insurance in the UK.

How much does the ULEZ cost in London in 2026?

The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) covers all of London up to the M25 since August 2023. The rate is 12.50 pounds per day (about 14.80 euros) for non-compliant vehicles (petrol before 2005, diesel before 2015). The Congestion Charge adds 15 pounds in the centre. Payment before midnight the next day, otherwise a 180 pound fine.

How to get used to driving on the left in the UK?

Allow 30 minutes on average to acquire the first reflexes of driving on the left, and 2 to 3 days to master it. Main difficulties: parking exits (look right first), roundabouts (clockwise), and overtaking (stay left). Start in low-traffic areas, avoid night driving the first day, and stick a Drive Left sticker on the dashboard.

Is a France sticker mandatory in the UK?

Yes, since 28 September 2021, the UK sticker is mandatory in the UK, and the F sticker remains mandatory for French vehicles without an euroband plate, even if the plate has the European flag. The F sticker must be black on white, oval, minimum 11.5 cm. Default: 100 pound fine (118 euros). Available at petrol stations 3 to 8 euros.
