Car-sharing in Paris (Mobilize, Free2Move, Communauto): which service for which use

Mobilize, Free2Move, Communauto: an honest 2026 comparison of Paris car-sharing services. Real prices, fleets, user profiles.

Voiture en autopartage stationnee dans une rue parisienne

Since the end of Autolib in 2018, Paris is still searching for car-sharing balance. In 2026, three main players structure the inner-city market: Mobilize (Renault group, which absorbed ZITY), Free2Move (Stellantis group, ex-PSA), and Communauto (Quebec cooperative). They do not target the same profile. Here is how to choose.

The three 2026 car-sharing models

Free-float: pick up and drop off anywhere

This is the Mobilize and Free2Move model. Unlock a car in an authorised zone via the app, drive, leave it on any allowed spot at destination. Ideal for one-way trips, like driving to a meeting then taking the metro home.

Round trip: return to the starting station

This is the Communauto model. The car is parked at a dedicated bay, you book it for a fixed duration in advance and bring it back to the same spot. Better suited for shopping, weekend escapes, partial moves.

Paris 2026 hybrid status

None of these services covers the entirety of Paris with free parking. All have defined operation zones by district, and extensions into the inner suburbs (Boulogne-Billancourt, Saint-Denis, Vincennes). Verify the zone before subscribing.

Mobilize: the all-electric historical fleet

Pricing and fleet

Mobilize is almost entirely Renault Zoé, with a few Twingo Electrics. 2026 rate: about 0.38 euro per minute, degressive past an hour (1h, 3h, day packages). Coverage: inner Paris plus 60 Île-de-France towns, including all major inner-ring cities.

For whom?

Someone wanting a clean car, Crit'Air-exempt by default (so no ZFE worry), doing mostly short inner-city trips or Paris to inner suburbs. Limit: real range 180 to 220 km per charge, and Zoé units in service are often at 40-60 percent battery on pickup.

Free2Move: broader thermal and hybrid fleet

Pricing and fleet

Free2Move offers Peugeot 208, Citroën C3, DS 3 and a few electric models (e-208). 2026 rate: about 0.32 euro per minute, degressive on duration. Coverage: inner Paris and suburbs, with Orly and Charles-de-Gaulle airport integration in some packages.

For whom?

Someone needing range and flexibility, willing to handle fuelling or charging according to model, and wanting more suburb-available service. Watch out: thermal models are subject to the active ZFE Crit'Air rules.

Communauto: the cheap cooperative for real users

Pricing and fleet

Communauto runs in round-trip mode (return to bay), with a mixed hybrid and electric fleet. 2026 rate: base subscription around 6 euros per month, then about 3 euros per hour for the first hours, plus a low per-km rate. For a 600 km weekend: about 90 to 110 euros all in.

For whom?

Someone needing a car occasionally - once a month for shopping at Decathlon, a partial move, a weekend escape. The low hourly rate and cooperative model make Communauto unbeatable for this profile. Drawback: you must plan ahead and return to the bay.

Comparison on three real scenarios

Scenario 1: medical appointment 16th district to Saint-Maur (35-min trip)

Mobilize: about 13 euros each way = 26 euros. Free2Move: about 11 + 11 = 22 euros. Communauto: not optimal in round-trip mode, around 12 euros with short stop. Verdict: Free2Move or one-way Mobilize then metro. Cityscoot shared moped is still faster but reduced service in 2026.

Scenario 2: Ikea Roissy shopping Saturday (4 hours round trip)

Mobilize: around 90 euros on meter. Free2Move: around 75 euros. Communauto: subscription + 12 euros for 4 hours + 15 cents per km, around 50 euros all in. Verdict: Communauto by a mile.

Scenario 3: Normandy weekend 600 km (48 hours)

Mobilize: unsuitable, range and cost issues. Free2Move: with long package, around 180 to 220 euros plus fuel. Communauto: around 110 to 140 euros all in including fuel, excluding tolls. Verdict: Communauto remains unbeatable, otherwise classic rental at Hertz or Sixt at 80-100 euros per day.

Hidden costs to know

Parking and fines

All services pass parking fines to the user. In Paris, the unpaid parking forfait climbs to 75 euros. Always check the allowed parking zone on arrival, the app states it.

Free2Move fuel

On thermal Free2Move, fuel may or may not be included depending on package. Read the terms - some weekend deals leave the tank refill at your charge.

Insurance and excess

All include comprehensive insurance with an excess. Count 800 to 2,000 euros excess on an at-fault collision. An excess waiver option at 3-5 euros per trip brings risk down to 150-300 euros.

Do you really need a B licence?

Yes, and a B licence held for 1 to 2 years depending on the service (Mobilize 1 year, Free2Move 2 years, Communauto 1 year). Foreign non-EU licences often need an international permit. If you do not have the licence yet, now is the time: these services only pay off if you really use them, and that means being free to drive.

DevisPermis expert opinion

Car-sharing in Paris is now a genuine alternative to private ownership, but not a one-size-fits-all service. Mobilize for short clean inner-city trips, Free2Move for varied Paris-suburb trips, Communauto for low-frequency planned use. The real question: how many car trips per month? Below 10, these services are cheaper than owning. Above, rethink your needs.

Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

What is the best car-sharing service in Paris in 2026?

In Paris in 2026, the three major car-sharing services are Free2Move (Stellantis, 0.39 euro/min, 1,500 vehicles), Mobilize Share (Renault, 0.38 euro/min, 1,200 vehicles) and Communauto (round-trip booking, 3 euros/h + km). Free2Move covers the largest zone outside Paris, Mobilize offers EVs, Communauto remains cheapest for trips over 4 hours.

How much does an hour of car-sharing cost in Paris?

An hour of car-sharing in Paris costs between 18 and 24 euros at Free2Move or Mobilize (0.30 to 0.40 euro/minute), 3 euros + 0.30 euro/km at Communauto. For 2 hours and 30 km, count 40 euros free-floating vs 15 euros Communauto. Subscription reduces to 0.32 euro/min (Free2Move Premium 9.99 euros/month) if more than 25 minutes/month usage.

How does car-sharing insurance excess work?

Car-sharing insurance excess covers damage up to 500 to 1,500 euros by default (1,200 euros Free2Move, 1,500 euros Mobilize, 800 euros Communauto). Excess buyback reduces this to 0 to 100 euros for 4 to 8 euros per trip or 8 to 15 euros/month subscription. Essential for novice drivers or dense urban trips.

Do you need to have had a licence for long to use car-sharing?

Paris car-sharing services require at least 1 year licence (Free2Move, Mobilize) or 3 years (Communauto). Minimum age varies from 18 (Mobilize Share) to 21 (Free2Move). A young driver surcharge of 1 to 3 euros/trip often applies before age 25. The licence must be shown at registration, with FNPC verification.
