Paris, VTC and taxi market in 2026: overview
Paris remains in 2026 the largest VTC and taxi market in continental Europe. There are about 38,000 active VTC drivers (Uber, Bolt, Marcel, Heetch, Free Now) and 18,000 Parisian taxis. Contrary to popular belief, the market is not saturated: demand continues to grow (+6% in 2025), notably driven by post-Games tourism, business trips and young Parisians giving up personal cars.
The average income of a VTC driver in Paris in 2026 is around €2,200-3,000 net monthly for 45-55 weekly hours. A taxi driver holder of a Parisian licence can reach €3,000-4,500 net thanks to station and airport races. These are correct incomes, especially given the relatively low entry price (VTC) or very high (taxi via licence that costs €100,000-160,000 in Paris).
VTC in Paris: access conditions in 2026
Mandatory prerequisites
To become a VTC driver, you must fulfill the following conditions: B licence for more than 3 years (2 years if followed by a validated accompanied driving), clean criminal record (bulletin n°2), medical certificate of driving fitness, obtaining the VTC professional card after exam success.
The VTC exam
The VTC exam includes 7 tests: regulation of particular public transport of people, road safety, management and enterprise, English (minimum A2 level), French (expression and comprehension), knowledge of the territory (Parisian geography), practical driving.
2025 success rate in Paris: 62% on first presentation. The most selective tests: knowledge of the Parisian territory (you must memorize streets, monuments, main axes), and English for those whose language it is not mastered.
VTC training
Mandatory preparatory training since 2018: minimum 200 hours in an approved organism. Average budget in Paris: €1,800 – €2,800 depending on the organism. Duration: 2 to 6 months depending on the chosen pace (intensive or spread). Several large Parisian organisms: IFAC VTC, Adic VTC, Uberpermis, VTC Paris. Possible aids: CPF (up to €1,500), Pôle Emploi for jobseekers (up to €1,800), Regional Council in some cases.
Taxi in Paris: the specific system
The Parisian taxi licence
To become a taxi in Paris, two options exist: buy a taxi licence (€100,000 – €160,000 in 2026) or become a tenant-monthly driver (employee of an artisan or a company). The purchase option has become a minority since 2014 when licences are no longer free.
The Parisian taxi licence includes: the right to park at Paris taxi stations, the right to use reserved bus/taxi lanes, authorization to take charge without reservation (cruising, which VTCs cannot do). This is the biggest VTC/taxi difference in 2026.
The Paris taxi exam
The Parisian taxi exam is distinct from the VTC exam and includes a very demanding additional test: deep knowledge of Paris's 6,000 streets, monuments, hospitals, museums, metro stations. This test requires 3-6 months of intense preparation. Success rate: 48% on first presentation.
Paris taxi training: 250-300 hours. Budget: €2,500 – €3,500. Main organisms: CFP Union, Adic Taxi.
VTC or taxi: which choice to make in 2026?
VTC advantages
Faster access (200h training + more accessible exam), limited initial investment (no licence to buy), exercise flexibility (multi-platforms), modernity of applications. Disadvantages: race only on reservation (no cruising), strong competition on platforms, high commissions (25-30% Uber), dependence on algorithms.
Paris taxi advantages
Right to cruising (customer raising hand), access to premium stations (airports, stations), regulated rates (secure), exclusivity on some trips (Roissy airport at night with mandatory package). Disadvantages: very expensive licence to buy, longer training, less hourly flexibility.
Specific equipment and fees in 2026
Vehicle: mandatorily recent (less than 6 years old to start, 10 years max), 4 doors minimum, minimum power 4 kW/100 kg, discreet color. Since 2025, Paris requires for new VTC authorizations a Crit'Air 1 or electric vehicle (ZFE obliges). Vehicle budget: long-term rental €380-600 per month or purchase €15,000-35,000.
Professional insurance: €1,200-2,200 per year. VTC tax (since 2017): €0.36 per trip paid to the State for new authorizations. Smartphone, GPS, payment terminal: budget €500-900.
The typical path of a future VTC Parisian driver in 2026
Step 1 (month 1-2): registration at an approved training organism, file constitution (criminal record, licence, medical visit). Step 2 (month 2-4): 200-hour training. Step 3 (month 4-5): exam (theory + practice). Step 4 (month 5-6): obtaining VTC pro card, micro-enterprise or company registration, choice of vehicle (purchase/rental), platform registration (Uber, Bolt, etc.), first income.
Realistic total delay from decision to first income: 5-7 months. Total budget to start (excluding vehicle): €3,000 – €4,500.
