Taking the driving test in Montargis means adapting to a Loiret sub-prefecture environment of around 14,800 inhabitants, heart of the Montargois Et Rives du Loing agglomeration in the Centre-Val de Loire region, located 110 km south of Paris at the confluence of the Loing, Vernisson, Solin and Briare canal. An emblematic city nicknamed the "Venice of Gatinais" for its 131 bridges and footbridges spanning the multiple water arms (Briare canal, Loing, medieval branches), Montargis is organised around the old centre tightened in the Loing meander (Place du Pati, Place du Marechal-Leclerc), the station district to the east, the residential Chaussy district to the south, the Plein-Sud and La Chaussee districts to the south-east, and the Vimory industrial zone to the south. The main road axis is the A77 (Motorway of the Tree, Cosne-sur-Loire-Dordives route), accessible via exit 18 (Montargis-Amilly) and exit 19 (Montargis-Centre), which bypasses Montargis to the east and is the backbone to Paris (A6 at Dordives) and Nievre. The N7 (historic Paris-Lyon route) crosses Montargis from north to south and remains the free alternative axis (historic National 7 road sung by Charles Trenet). The D2007 (eastern N7 diversion) bypasses the town to the east. The D921 (Montargis-Pithiviers route) leads north-west. The D2060 (Montargis-Gien route) leads east. Avenue Antoine-Coquard and Rue Gambetta structure the centre crossing. The multiple bridges (pont Notre-Dame, pont du Marche, pont de la Mere-Vincent, pont des Mascarets) span the water arms at the heart of the town. The Montargis TER-Intercites station (Paris-Nevers line) generates traffic to Paris-Bercy (1h30) and Burgundy.

Montargis candidates take their test at the Montargis practical exam centre, one of the four Loiret centres (along with Olivet, Pithiviers and Gien). Typical exam routes cross the A77 with merging via exits 18 and 19, mandatorily include crossing several bridges (managing right-of-way on narrow streets leaving bridges, sometimes with reduced gauge passages), traverse the centre via Rue Gambetta and Place du Pati, include the Chalette-sur-Loing retail-zone (Geant Casino) and Vimory industrial-zone roundabouts, pass through the N7 and A77 accesses, and exit towards Amilly via the D43 or Villemandeur via the D921. The Loiret pass rate (63.6%) stays above the national average (58%), a sign of effective training in a varied department mixing urban (Orleans), peri-urban and closed-rural areas.

The degraded oceanic Gatinais climate adds constraints: extremely frequent and persistent morning fog in the Loing valley and on the Briare canal in autumn and winter (Montargis has a reputation as one of France's mistiest towns), regular frost and ice on the bridges (Notre-Dame, Marche), occasional snow paralysing the N7 and A77 accesses. The numerous bridges become priority-slippery in ice due to their aerial exposure. Tourist pressure linked to the "Venice of Gatinais", the medieval city and the praline generates occasional peaks (notably during the Sunday market, one of Loiret's largest). Industrial pressure (Hutchinson, Chalette-sur-Loing paper mill) generates permanent heavy-goods traffic.
