Unlimited access to all motorcycles
A Motorcycle License
The A license is the unrestricted motorcycle license. It is accessible from age 24 directly, or after 2 years riding on an A2 license. With the A license, you can ride any motorcycle, including the most powerful.

How it works
01
Skills assessment
Assessment of your ability to ride a high-powered motorcycle.
02
Progressive training (7h)
For A2 holders of at least 2 years: specific large-bike training on the exercise area and in traffic.
03
Competency validation
Attestation issued by the instructor. File sent to the prefecture to update your license.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to retake a test to get the A from A2?
No. The progressive A2 → A route does not require an exam. A 7-hour course at a motorcycle school is enough, provided you have ridden on the A2 for at least 2 years.
Can I go straight to the A without the A2?
Yes, from age 24. The course is complete and includes the motorcycle code, manoeuvring and road riding tests - the same as for the A2.
How much does the A2-to-A upgrade cost?
The 7-hour upgrade course generally costs between €1290 and €1600. It is a short course lasting half a day to a full day depending on the motorcycle school.
Is there a maximum age to take the A?
No, there is no upper age limit for the A license. However, some sports medicine centres recommend a health check for candidates over 50 wishing to ride high-powered bikes.
