Taking the driving test in Mont-de-Marsan means adapting to a Landes prefecture environment of around 31,600 inhabitants, the department's main town and heart of the Marsan agglomeration in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, located at the confluence of the Midouze, Midou and Douze at the heart of the Landes forest (one of Europe's largest cultivated forests, 1 million hectares of maritime pine). The main road axis is the A65 (Pau-Langon motorway, toll), accessible via exit 8 (Mont-de-Marsan-South) and exit 9 (Mont-de-Marsan-North), which bypasses Mont-de-Marsan to the east and is the backbone to Bordeaux (130 km) and Pau (110 km). The N134 (historic Bordeaux-Pau-Spain route) crosses Mont-de-Marsan from north to south and remains the free alternative axis. The D824 (Mont-de-Marsan-Bayonne route via Dax) leads west. The D932 (Mont-de-Marsan-Tartas route) leads north-west. The D1 serves the air base and Saint-Avit. Avenue du Marechal-Foch and Avenue de Lattre-de-Tassigny structure the centre crossing. The Mont-de-Marsan TER station (Morcenx-Mont-de-Marsan line) generates limited regional traffic (lacking direct TGV connection).

Mont-de-Marsan candidates take their test at the Mont-de-Marsan practical exam centre, the Landes department's only centre (the department being very extensive with 311 communes). Typical exam routes cross the A65 with merging via exits 8 and 9, include forest roads straight at 80 km/h and their poorly-marked crossings (D824 to Dax, D933 to Roquefort), traverse the centre via Place du General-Leclerc and the Midouze bridges, include the Grand Moun retail-zone and Marsan business-zone roundabouts, pass through the air base 118 accesses (military easements), and exit towards Saint-Pierre-du-Mont via the D824 or Saint-Avit via the D1. The Landes pass rate (67.7%) is clearly above the national average (58%), a sign of an exam on a small centre with well-known routes, low pressure and well-suited training.

The Aquitanian oceanic climate adds constraints: very frequent rain year-round (180 days per year), frequent morning fog in the three rivers' valleys in autumn and winter, severe storm episodes in summer (the Landes "storm belt" concentrates lightning strikes), winter storms with westerly winds reaching 120 km/h in midwinter (storm Klaus 2009, Xynthia 2010, remembered in the Landes forest). The major summer fire risk (the Landes forest is one of France's most exposed, devastating 2022 fires in Gironde reminding of the risk) requires vigilance on forest roads (DFCI signs, fire barriers, avoid throwing cigarettes and butts). Tourist pressure linked to bullfights (Madeleine feria in July, one of France's largest ferias with 600,000 visitors), the Arte Flamenco festival and proximity to Landes beaches (Hossegor 75 km away) generates summer peaks.
