Taking the driving test in Meylan means adapting to a residential Isere commune environment of around 18,800 inhabitants, part of the Grenoble-Alpes Metropole metropolis in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, located immediately north-east of Grenoble in the Gresivaudan valley at the foot of the Chartreuse massif. An emblematic scientific and technological city (Inovallee, France's first technopole created in 1971 with over 11,000 jobs in research and digital), Meylan is organised around the old centre called "Bourg" around Saint-Pierre church, the Haut-Meylan district clinging to the Chartreuse foothills, Bas-Meylan on the plain near the ring road, the Hauts-de-Bel-Air and Beralles, and the Inovallee park to the east. The commune attracts a population of particularly highly educated executives and engineers (one of France's highest median incomes).

The main road axis is the southern A480-A41 ring road (Grenoble ring road), accessible via exits 25 (Meylan-Inovallee) and 26 (Meylan-Centre), which rings the commune to the south and is the Grenoble backbone. The A41 north starts via exit 26 to Chambery (50 km) then Geneva (130 km). The A48 to Lyon starts from the southern interchange via Grenoble. The N90 to Savoie passes via the A41. Avenue de Verdun and Avenue du Vercors structure east-west crossing. The D11 (Avenue de Chartreuse) leads to the massif foothills. The D165 serves Inovallee. Tramway B (Grenoble Cite Internationale-Gieres) serves Meylan with the Maupertuis and Plaine des Sports stations. The pont de l'Yseron spans the torrent flowing from the Chartreuse.

Meylan candidates take their test at the Grenoble practical exam centre, the main Isere centre (with Voiron, Bourgoin-Jallieu and Vienne). Typical exam routes cross the A480-A41 ring road with merging via exits 25 and 26, include marked slopes to Haut-Meylan and the Chartreuse paths (Bel-Air, Pre-de-l'Eau) with 8 to 10% gradients, include coexistence with tramway B on Avenue de Verdun (dedicated platform), traverse the historic bourg via the Chartreuse road, include the Inovallee (technology park) and Carrefour Meylan retail-zone roundabouts, and exit towards Saint-Ismier via the D1090 or Crolles via the D10. The Isere pass rate (61.9%) stays above the national average (58%), a sign of effective training.

The semi-continental Alpine climate adds severe constraints: harsh winters with frequent snow from November to April (significant cumulations at altitude on Haut-Meylan at 350 m), very regular frost and ice in the valley floor (Bas-Meylan, A480), frequent thermal-inversion fogs trapping pollution in the Grenoble basin, autumn Cevennes heavy-rainfall episodes. Grenoble Metropole, which includes Meylan, has had a LEZ since 2019 (Crit'Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified banned outside motorways and ring road), a regime subject to the abolition law voted in April 2026. Slopes to Haut-Meylan and Chartreuse forest paths reach 12% and become extremely slippery in ice, requiring winter tyres and sometimes chains. Commuter pressure to Grenoble (Inovallee generates reverse suburban flow), saturated at peak hours on the ring road, requires good mastery of merging.
