Taking the driving test in Mende means adapting to a Lozere prefecture environment of around 12,500 inhabitants, the department's main town and heart of the Coeur de Lozere community of communes in the Occitanie region, located in the Lot valley at 730 metres altitude at the foot of the Mende causse. A historic episcopal city (Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat cathedral), Mende is metropolitan France's smallest prefecture by population and concentrates administrative services for one of the least densely populated departments (15 inhab/km2). The commune is organised around the old centre tightened in the Lot meander, the southern Fontanilles district, the National Dairy Industry School district, and the hamlets of surrounding plateaus (Chabrits, Aubrac).

The main road axis is the N88 (Lyon-Toulouse route), a dual-carriageway express road bypassing Mende to the north via exits 35, 36 and 37, and the department's only fast link to Le Puy-en-Velay to the east and Rodez to the west. The A75 (toll-free Clermont-Beziers motorway) passes 35 km to the west at Aumont-Aubrac and is the major national access. The D806 (former N106) crosses the Lot valley to Florac and the Aigoual. The D25 leads to Mont Lozere and Villefort. The N106 serves Marvejols (25 km) and the N9 leads south (Saint-Chely-d'Apcher). The listed medieval Notre-Dame bridge and the Marquayrols bridge span the Lot.

Mende candidates take their test at the Mende practical exam centre, the Lozere department's only centre. Typical exam routes cross the N88 with merging via exits 35, 36 or 37, include steep slopes towards the Mende causse (D25) or Chabrits (D42), traverse the old centre via the Notre-Dame bridge and narrow medieval streets (Rue Notre-Dame, Rue d'Aigues-Passes), include the Causse d'Auge retail-zone roundabouts, and exit towards Marvejols via the N106 or Florac via the D806. The Lozere pass rate (79.9%) is metropolitan France's highest, a sign of an exam on a small centre with well-known routes, low pressure and training well suited to mountainous terrain.

The mid-mountain climate (Cevennes-Aubrac) adds severe constraints: harsh winters with frequent snow from November to April on plateaus and causses (50 cm cumulations possible), very regular frost and ice in the Lot valley floor, autumn Cevennes episodes with torrential rainfall, frequent thermal-inversion fogs. Urban slopes (causse access, D25 to Mont Lozere) reach 10 to 12% gradients and become extremely slippery in ice. Lozere highway code preparation includes mid-mountain driving specifics (chains mandatory in winter, driving on wind-exposed causse), coexistence with wildlife (deer, wild boar, Causse Mejean vultures), and systematic reading of Lozere weather bulletins before any winter trip on the N88.
