Taking the driving test in Gueret means training in the Creuse prefecture, a town of around 13,000 inhabitants in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, on the Marche plateau at the heart of the Massif Central. The D940 to La Souterraine and Limoges south-west, D942 to Aubusson south-east, D914 to Boussac and southern Berry north-east and D990 to Felletin complete connections. The A20 Vierzon-Limoges-Toulouse, the region's main motorway axis, is accessible at La Souterraine or Limoges via the D940 (45 to 90 km).

Gueret candidates take their test at the Gueret practical exam centre, the main and almost sole centre of the Creuse department, integrated into the Creuse pool. Typical exam routes cross the N145, traverse the centre via Rue Grancher and Rue Sylvain-Blanchet, include the Champ Sainte-Radegonde retail area roundabouts and exit towards Sainte-Feyre, Saint-Laurent or the Monts de Gueret massif. The Creuse pass rate (59.6%) sits very slightly above the national average, a sign of rigorous training on demanding rural terrain.

The altitude continental climate adds constraints: frequent cold snowy winters (Gueret is one of France's most snowy prefectures outside the massifs), late spring frosts, morning fogs on ponds and vales from October to May, hot and dry but short summers. Low population density generates significant real distances between services and total car dependency for many Creuse residents. Tourist pressure remains moderate but real in summer (Centre des Monts de Gueret with its maze, nearby Lac de Vassiviere, Millevaches plateau).
