Taking your driving test in Bordeaux means dealing with a Nouvelle-Aquitaine metropolis of about 260,000 inhabitants within the city limits, prefecture of the Gironde department (33) and ninth-largest city in France. The Garonne river crosses the commune from south to north and separates the historic left bank, UNESCO World Heritage-listed, from the right bank organised around the Bastide district. Category B candidates drive through an urban fabric combining straight quays, listed squares, dense faubourgs and the inner metropolitan ring, all under the Bordeaux Metropole Low Emission Zone regime active since 2025 within the ring road perimeter.

The main road axis of the conurbation is the A630 ring road, a motorway loop of about 45 km that surrounds the metropolis and concentrates most commuter traffic between Bordeaux, Merignac, Pessac, Talence, Begles and the right bank. Its 110 km/h merging lanes, its 27 exits and its bridges over the Garonne (Pont d'Aquitaine to the north, Eysines viaduct to the west) are very frequent features of the practical exam. Inside the city, the main structuring axes remain the cours de l'Intendance and cours Victor-Hugo on the left bank, the cours Clemenceau, the outer boulevards from Strasbourg to Wilson, and the Pont Chaban-Delmas and Pont Saint-Jean for motorised crossings. The Pont de Pierre itself has been closed to private cars since 2018 and reserved for buses, taxis, bikes and pedestrians.

The Bordeaux Metropole Low Emission Zone has banned the most polluting vehicles within the ring road perimeter since 2025, which directly affects inbound flows from the Medoc, the Arcachon Basin or the right bank. Candidates must integrate this constraint from the Gironde highway code stage and learn to read the specific Crit'Air signage. The department's practical test centres, organised around Bordeaux Nord, Bordeaux Sud and Merignac, cover most Gironde applications, with routes alternating between 30 km/h city-centre zones, Bordeaux boulevards, ring road sections and links to the inner suburbs.

The Bordeaux specificity also stems from its immediate suburbs and hinterland. Merignac concentrates the airport and large business zones served by the western ring road, Pessac hosts the largest university campus in France, Talence and Begles extend the urban fabric to the south, while the Medoc, Graves and Saint-Emilion vineyards border the conurbation. Mastering driving on shared tramway sections (four lines A, B, C, D), coexisting with a very developed cycle network around Velibordo and park-and-ride facilities, and handling the westerly wind on the bridges are among the skills expected to obtain the category B licence in Bordeaux.
