The voluntary road safety awareness course, better known as the points recovery course, remains in 2026 the only quick way to regain licence points without waiting for automatic restoration. You still need to check your eligibility, choose a reliable centre and understand the mechanics of the 4 recovered points. Full overview.
The principle of the voluntary course in 2026
Framed by articles L223-6 and R223-8 of the highway code, the awareness course lasts 2 consecutive days (14 effective hours) and allows recovery of up to 4 points on the driving licence. It is organised by centres approved by the department prefecture, and led by a duo: a road safety expert facilitator and a psychologist.
On a voluntary basis, this course can be taken ONCE every year (down to the day on the previous course date). Anyone holding a valid French licence with fewer than 12 points can enrol, except for revoked or invalid licences.
Check your points balance before enrolling
Before booking a course, the first mandatory step is to consult your official points balance. The reference service is Mes Points Permis (mespointspermis.fr), accessible via FranceConnect. It shows your current capital, the history of deductions and the date of the last recorded event.
Why this check is crucial
If you already have 12 points, the voluntary course brings nothing: you never exceed 12 points. If you have 9, you might only recover 3 points (up to the 12 ceiling). If you have 7 or fewer, the 4 points will actually be credited. Knowing your balance avoids paying 200 to 280 euros for nothing.
Precise eligibility conditions
Three cumulative conditions in 2026. First condition: holding a valid licence, not invalidated or judicially revoked. Second condition: not having taken a course in the last 12 months. Third condition: having at least 1 point on the licence (a licence at 0 points is invalid and requires a different procedure).
Specifics for the probationary licence: young drivers in the probationary period (3 years, 2 years for AAC) can take a voluntary course under the same conditions, but the course becomes mandatory as soon as they lose 3 or more points in a single offence. In that case, it is no longer voluntary.
Choose a prefecture-approved centre
Not all centres are equal. The basic rule: only centres holding a valid prefectural approval can issue a certificate recognised by the administration. Without this approval, your course is not counted and the 4 points are not recovered.
How to check the approval
The official list of approved centres is kept up to date by each prefecture. You can request it directly from your department prefecture or sub-prefecture. Any serious centre displays its approval number (in the form R XX XXX XXXX X) on its convocation and final certificate.
The 2-day programme
Day 1: group introduction, analysis of at-risk behaviour, accident statistics, study of risk factors (speed, alcohol, narcotics, fatigue, distraction at the wheel). Day 2: deeper dive into the human, legal and economic consequences of an accident, case studies, exchanges with the psychologist, individual conclusion.
Hours are strict: 8:30 to 12:30 then 13:30 to 17:30, with mandatory full attendance. Any lateness over 15 minutes or any partial absence invalidates the course. No refund is owed by the centre in that case.
Average price in 2026
The average price of a points recovery course in 2026 ranges from 200 to 280 euros depending on department and centre. Paris and the Île-de-France region sit in the upper range (240 to 280 euros), province in the lower range (200 to 230 euros).
No serious centre charges less than 180 euros: an abnormally low price should raise concerns about approval legitimacy. Conversely, rates above 320 euros rarely have real justification, except for ancillary services (accommodation, meals included).
When are the points actually recovered
The 4 points are credited to your licence the day after the last day of the course. The centre transmits the certificate to the national driving licence file (FNPC) within 48 working hours. You can verify the actual credit on Mes Points Permis within 5 to 10 days afterwards.
Keep the paper certificate: it is your proof in case of administrative dispute. The voluntary course remains an effective tool for anyone wanting to avoid invalidation, provided you anticipate the date and choose a duly approved centre.
