The myth: mandatory exam at 70
This is THE misconception that returns every year. In France in 2026, there is NO obligation of a periodic medical exam for private drivers (B, motorcycle) after 70, 75 or 80, unlike Italy, Portugal or the UK.
What is actually mandatory
For professional licences (C, CE, D, DE)
Medical exam every 5 years before age 60, every 2 years between 60 and 76, every year after 76. Applicable only to professionals (transport, trucks over 3.5 t, coaches). A retiree using their C1 for a large motorhome isn't subject to it.
Health self-declaration (non-mandatory)
Some insurers ask for an annual "health self-declaration" after 70, especially if claims exist. It has no official value for the licence.
The 2023–2024 bill permanently shelved
The government considered imposing an exam from age 70 or 75 in 2023. After parliamentary opposition and CNR recommendations, the project was dropped in 2024. In 2026, the framework is unchanged.
When can a senior be summoned?
On report by their GP
A doctor who detects an incompatible condition (advanced Alzheimer, severe Parkinson) can alert the medical Order's departmental council. An approved-doctor opinion can then be requested.
Following an accident or roadside check
If an accident or check reveals dangerous driving (confusion, falling asleep, fainting), the prefect can impose an approved medical exam.
On family request
A worried family can petition the prefect with a reasoned letter and possibly a medical certificate. An assessment process is then started.
Good practices from age 70
Annual vision check
Without being mandatory, have your sight checked every year. 40% of seniors discover a cataract or AMD at this check. €85 on average, partly reimbursed by social security and mutual insurance.
Hearing check every 2 years
Hearing loss reduces alertness (emergency sirens, horn). Audiologists do this check for free in 2026.
Senior refresher courses
Offered by many driving schools for €100–250 over 1–2 days. Goal: update Highway Code knowledge (recent signs, new rules), review modern techniques (roundabouts, urban stop-and-go, automatics).
Car insurance: anticipate restrictions
