When are points deducted?

Actual deduction occurs only after payment of the fine or final conviction - never at the flash. Average delay: 15 to 45 days between the offence and the notice at home.

Can you contest a speeding fine?

Admissible grounds

Unidentified driver with designation of another driver (within 45 days), clear error on speed (radar calibration challenged via CERT), offence committed with a stolen vehicle, non-compliant sign.

The procedure

You have 45 days to contest from notice receipt, using CERFA 52-0122 on ANTS. You must deposit the fine amount (except in special cases): it will be refunded if the contest succeeds.

Courses and points recovery

A road-safety awareness course lets you recover 4 points (within the 12-point cap), once per year. 2026 cost: €170-280, 2 days. Recommended as soon as 4-6 points are lost to avoid reaching zero.

"White licence" and fines?

The "permis blanc" (professional-exception permit) was abolished in 2019 for most speeding cases, except for administrative suspensions if the judge deems the suspension "incompatible with the professional activity". It has become rare.

Frequently asked

Your questions on this topic

What is the speeding penalty scale in 2026?

4 brackets: under 20 km/h outside built-up area = 68 EUR + 1 point, 20 to 30 km/h = 135 EUR + 2 points, 30 to 40 km/h = 135 EUR + 3 points, 40 to 50 km/h = 135 EUR + 4 points and up to 3-year suspension. Over 50 km/h: offence, 1,500 EUR, 6 points, 3-year suspension and possible vehicle confiscation. 5 km/h technical tolerance below 100 km/h.

How to contest a speeding fine in 2026?

45 days after notice receipt to file a request via form CERFA 52-0122 or online on ANTAI. Mandatory consignment of the fine amount. 3 valid reasons: vehicle not present, cloned plate, driver identification error (if loan declared). Cost: 0 EUR if won, otherwise consignment lost. 12 to 18 percent of challenges succeed in 2025.

How many points lost for 40 km/h over the limit?

4 points withdrawn between 40 and 50 km/h above the speed limit, plus a flat-rate 135 EUR fine and licence suspension up to 3 years by prefectural decision. Recovering the 4 points takes 2 years without new offence or a voluntary course (170 to 280 EUR) recovering 4 points in 2 days, limited to once per year.

What is the radar tolerance in 2026?

5 km/h technical tolerance below 100 km/h, and 5 percent beyond. Example: 130 km/h is flashed at 137 km/h real (5 percent of 130 = 6.5 km/h rounded to 7), or 50 km/h flashed at 55. This margin covers speedometer and sensor imprecisions. No tolerance exists however for red lights, safety distances or handheld phone use.
