The French licence in Europe: valid everywhere
In all countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA), the French driving licence is recognised directly and without any additional formality. You can drive in Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland (not EU but specific agreements), the United Kingdom post-Brexit (90 days without formality for short stays), etc.
The international driving permit: which countries require it?
The International Driving Permit (IDP) is required to drive in countries that do not directly recognise the European licence. In 2026, countries requiring the IDP include: Japan, China, Vietnam, some US states and Canadian provinces, Russia, Maghreb countries, and most African and Asian countries outside bilateral conventions.
How to obtain the international driving permit?
The application is made at the prefecture or sub-prefecture, or via the ANTS website. You need: a valid French licence, two identity photos, proof of identity, and payment of fees (approximately €25). The IDP is valid for 3 years in France and until expiry in some countries. It is a complement to your national licence, not a replacement.
The USA in 2026: state by state
The rule varies by US state. In most states (California, New York, Florida, Texas...), your French licence is recognised for tourist stays of up to 90 days or 1 year depending on the case. The IDP is not always required but is recommended as it is translated into English. For car hire, rental companies generally accept the French licence alone.
Driving in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria with a French licence
All three Maghreb countries recognise the French licence. France and these countries have bilateral conventions. However, taking your IDP is strongly recommended as local law enforcement may request it. The IDP translated into Arabic facilitates checks.
Specific rules to observe abroad
Comply with local rules (drink-driving, speed, priorities) which may differ from France. In the USA, a full stop is required at every stop sign (not just a slow-down). In the UK, drive on the left. In Australia, pedestrians have priority in roundabouts. Always check before you travel.
