Extend your pilot privileges

Airplane Qualifications

Beyond the basic license, qualifications allow pilots to extend their privileges. The main qualifications for airplane pilots are: instrument rating (IR or EIR), multi-engine rating (MEP), glider towing, aerobatics and night rating. Each qualification requires specific training and a check flight with an examiner.

On request
Airplane ratings: IFR, MEP, night flight, aerobatics and mountain flying

The essentials

Aviation ratings are EASA training that supplement an existing pilot licence: instrument flight (IFR/IR), multi-engine (ME), instructor (FI), aerobatics or specific type rating. Each rating requires specific theory + practical training, and gives access to new flight conditions (night, IFR, multi-engine aircraft). Costs vary widely: EUR 3,000 to EUR 25,000 depending on the rating and target aircraft.

Pricing and rates for Airplane Qualifications

The price of airplane qualifications varies widely by type. Night Rating: €1,500 to €3,000 for 5 minimum night flight hours, the most accessible. IR (Instrument Rating): €8,000 to €15,000 depending on the aero club and aircraft used, over 4 to 8 months in continuous training. MEP (Multi-Engine Piston): €4,000 to €8,000. Aerobatics: €2,500 to €5,000 per module. Glider towing: €1,500 to €2,500. All these qualifications require a valid pilot license (LAPL or PPL) and current medical aptitude. Renewal: revalidation every 2 years (SEP/MEP) or annually (IR).

How it works

01

Choose your qualification

Define your project: instrument rating, multi-engine, night, aerobatics... Each has its own prerequisites.

02

Dedicated training

Theoretical courses and specific flight hours for the chosen qualification.

03

Test or check

Skill test with an examiner. Qualification added to your license.

What's included

  • Specific theory and practical training
  • Check flight with an examiner (for most qualifications)

Prerequisites

  • Hold a pilot license (LAPL, PPL or higher)
  • Up-to-date medical fitness
  • Variable prerequisites depending on the qualification

Frequently asked questions

Is the IR rating included in the PPL?

No. The instrument rating (IR) is a separate qualification added to the PPL. It allows you to fly in cloud and in poor visibility.

How much does a night rating cost for an airplane pilot?

The night rating is one of the least expensive. Expect between €1,500 and €3,000, covering a minimum of 5 night flight hours with an instructor and 5 solo night take-offs and landings.

Do qualifications need to be renewed periodically?

Yes, most qualifications must be renewed. The IR needs a check every year. Multi-engine and single-engine class (SEP) ratings are renewed every 2 years via a revalidation check flight. The DGAC keeps the EASA Part-FCL schedules up to date for each qualification.

Which qualifications are most in demand by airlines?

For private flying: Night Rating (~5h flight), Instrument Rating (IR). For professional pilots heading for the ATPL: MEP (Multi-Engine Piston), MCC (Multi-Crew Coordination), Type Rating on A320/B737. The DGAC publishes the full list of EASA Part-FCL qualifications available in France.

Cost and duration of an IR airplane rating?

The IR rating (instrument flight) costs between €8,000 and €15,000 depending on the flying club, the aircraft used and simulator hours (FNPT II). Duration: 4 to 8 months in continuous training, or 6 to 18 months in evening/weekend classes. Prerequisites: valid PPL, SEP/MEP class rating, IR DGAC theory exam.
