Become a light aircraft pilot

LAPL Airplane License

The LAPL Airplane (Light Aircraft Pilot Licence) is the most accessible pilot license. It allows you to fly single-engine piston aircraft under 2 tonnes with up to 3 passengers, under visual flight rules (VFR) in Europe. It is the ideal entry point for those who want to fly for leisure without committing to the full PPL course.

LAPL(A) license: light aircraft private pilot, 30-hour minimum training

The essentials

The European LAPL is the lightest pilot licence, authorising VFR daytime flight on single-engine aircraft up to 2,000 kg with a maximum of 3 passengers. Reduced minimum: 30h flight (vs 45h for the PPL). 2026 cost between EUR 6,000 and EUR 9,000 in a flying club. Easier Class 2 LAPL medical, no IFR or international flight. Ideal for purely leisure aviation.

Pricing and rates for LAPL Airplane License

The price of LAPL airplane training ranges from €6,000 to €12,000 depending on the aero club and the actual hours needed (30h regulatory minimum EASA, but 35 to 45h average realistic). Flight hours: €150 to €250/h in associative aero clubs (Robin DR400, Cessna 152), €250 to €350/h in professional schools. The fee includes LAPL theory (9 subjects), DGAC theory exams, the Skill Test, and the Class 2 or LAPL EASA medical with an AME doctor (€80 to €150). Club membership: €200 to €500/year. It is the cheapest pilot license to start leisure aviation.

How it works

01

LAPL theory

Tuition on 9 subjects: meteorology, navigation, regulations, aircraft performance, human factors, etc.

02

Flight training

Minimum 30 flight hours with an instructor (FI). The first 6 solo hours are an important milestone.

03

Theory exam

MCQ exam organised by the DGAC covering the 9 LAPL subjects.

04

Skill test

Check flight with a qualified examiner (FE). On success, the license is issued.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between LAPL and PPL?

The LAPL is simpler and less expensive, but limited to light aircraft within Europe. The PPL is more complete and internationally recognised, with greater privileges (heavier aircraft, IFR possible, international flights outside Europe).

Can I progress from LAPL to PPL?

Yes, it is possible to convert a LAPL to a PPL. Additional flight hours and top-up training will be required depending on the case.

How much does LAPL airplane training cost?

LAPL training costs between €6000 and €12000 depending on the flying club and the actual hours needed. It is the least expensive pilot license, ideal for starting leisure aviation.

Is the LAPL valid for flying abroad?

The LAPL is valid in all EASA member states (Europe, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland). Outside this zone it is generally not recognised, and a PPL will be needed to fly legally.

What medical certificate is required for the LAPL?

The LAPL requires a Class 2 or LAPL (lighter) medical certificate, issued by an EASA-approved aero-medical examiner (AME) on the list published by the DGAC. Validity: 5 years before age 40, 2 years after. Cost: around €80 to €150. The check covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular system and absence of epilepsy or insulin-dependent diabetes.

How many hours must I fly to keep the LAPL valid?

To exercise LAPL privileges, you must have flown at least 12 hours PIC (Pilot In Command) in the past 24 months, including 12 take-offs and landings, and 1 hour of flight instruction with an FI. Otherwise, a check flight with an instructor is required. The DGAC keeps the EASA Part-FCL requirements up to date.
