What is the A2 motorcycle licence?

The A2 licence is the second level of motorcycle licence in France. It allows riding motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW (48 hp) and a power-to-weight ratio below 0.2 kW/kg. It is aimed at riders aged at least 18 and is the intermediate step between the A1 licence (small engines) and the full A licence (unlimited access after 2 years of A2 or minimum age of 21).

Conditions to take the A2 licence

To enrol in A2 training, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a car licence (B) or an A1 licence for at least 2 years (in which case a 7-hour course replaces the full training). If you hold no previous motorcycle licence, the full training applies.

A2 training: how does it work?

Theory training

If you do not already hold a valid theory certificate, you must first pass it. If you have a car licence (B), you do not need to retake it. However, knowledge of the motorcycle-specific theory (specific behaviours, signs, mandatory equipment) is strongly recommended.

Practical training ETM

Training includes a minimum of 20 hours of riding on a circuit and in traffic. It is split into two phases: the circuit (manoeuvrability, braking, low-speed balance) and on-road riding (traffic behaviour, managing junctions, motorway riding).

The exams

The A2 exam consists of two parts: the ETM (off-road manoeuvrability circuit) and the ETPM (real on-road riding). The ETM includes compulsory figures such as slalom, emergency braking and obstacle avoidance.

How much does the A2 licence cost?

Full A2 training costs between €1,200 and €1,800 depending on the school. This fee generally includes registration, training hours, motorcycle hire for exams and exam fees. DevisPermis.fr partner schools will provide a detailed, personalised quote within 48 hours.

From A2 to full A licence: the progression

After 2 years of riding with the A2 licence and reaching the age of 20 (or 24 without prior A2 training), you can access the full A licence via a 7-hour supplementary course. This ensures a gradual and safe progression to more powerful machines.
