Personal watercraft: what are we talking about?
A PWC (Personal Watercraft), also called jet-ski, is a 3-4 m long craft powered by a turbine, carrying 1 to 4 people. In 2026, France counts around 35,000 registered leisure PWCs, plus tens of thousands of seasonal rentals.
Which licence to operate a PWC?
Pleasure licence, coastal option
The coastal licence (or coastal option of the pleasure licence) is mandatory to operate a PWC more than 300 m from shore. Same licence required for a coastal motorboat. 10-15 hours of training + exam. 2026 price: €350-600.
Within the 300 m coastal zone
Between 0 and 300 m from shore, PWCs can be used without a licence, provided they ride at reduced speed (5 knots in most restricted zones). This rule is however an exception as most bases require the licence.
Rental: light supervision
Many rental bases (Côte d’Azur, Arcachon, Corsica) offer instructor-led rides: no licence needed. Rule: the renter must stay in line of sight, and you must sign a navigation charter. Price: €120-220 for a 30-minute to 1-hour session.
Training and exam in 2026
Theory
Common programme with the boat licence: navigation rules, marking, maritime priorities, first aid, weather. 30-question MCQ including 5-8 questions strictly tied to PWCs (300 m rule, noise, safety).
Practical
Minimum 5 hours on PWC: handling, figure-of-eight, controlled acceleration, return after falling in the water, emergency stop. Practical exam integrated into training.
Required equipment
CE-approved life jacket, wrist-attached kill switch, waterproof torch, distress flares if navigating beyond 2 nautical miles. Wetsuit recommended in cool waters. In 2026, several rentals also require a digital kill switch with geolocation (mandatory in some restricted zones).
Where to ride in France?
Mediterranean (Côte d’Azur, Corsica, Languedoc)
The highest density of PWC bases. Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Ajaccio, Argelès-sur-Mer, Palavas. Many ZIEM (engine-restricted zones) near beaches.
Atlantic (Arcachon Bay, Landes, Vendée)
Cooler waters but beautiful to ride in the dunes. Arcachon, Lacanau, Les Sables-d’Olonne. Watch out for tide currents.
Inland lakes
Forbidden on most French lakes (noise pollution). Allowed on a few artificial reservoirs under specific rules (Serre-Ponçon, Vassivière). Check with the prefecture.
Budget in 2026
Coastal licence: €350-600. Day rental: €350-600 (seasonal). New PWC purchase: €11,000 to €25,000 (Yamaha, Sea-Doo, Kawasaki). Used 3-5 years: €6,000 to €15,000. Annual insurance: €250-550. Winter storage: €300-600 in a base.
Electric PWCs: the 2026 trend
Taïga Motors and Nikola Marine now offer fully electric jet-skis (40-60 kW, 1-2 h range, €25,000-40,000). Quiet, allowed in zones forbidden to combustion PWCs. Expected segment boom in 2027.
