Why new questions on electric vehicles?
With more than 25% of new registrations being electric or hybrid in 2026, the Ministry of the Interior deemed it essential to update the content of the theory test. The new questions cover behaviours specific to these vehicles that any driver may encounter.
The topics of the new questions
Five new themes have been introduced: 1) Braking distances of electric vehicles (generally shorter thanks to regenerative braking but variable). 2) Driving in energy recovery mode and its effect on deceleration. 3) Specific behaviours of silent vehicles near pedestrian areas. 4) Driving with low battery and the recommended actions. 5) Safety rules around charging points.
Braking distances: a recurring topic
Among the new questions, braking is a central theme. An electric vehicle can decelerate faster than a combustion engine in 'one-pedal driving' mode, which changes safe following distance calculations. The questions assess your understanding of these differences.
How to prepare for these new questions?
Good news: approved theory preparation apps have already integrated these new questions into their databases. Make sure you are using an updated version (from January 2026 onwards). The method remains the same: repetition, review of errors, full test simulations.
The rest of the syllabus is unchanged
The 1,500+ standard questions remain on the syllabus. Classic topics (right of way, signage, stopping distances, alcohol) still make up 90% of the exam content. The new electric questions do not replace the old ones: the test remains 40 questions, with 35 correct answers required.
Results available within 48 hours
Since 2026, theory test results are available in less than 48 hours in 80% of cases, thanks to the widespread use of digital tablets in exam centres. You receive your result by SMS and via your ANTS account.

Frequently asked
Your questions on this topic
What new questions about electric vehicles in 2026?
The 2026 highway code integrates about thirty new questions on electric and hybrid vehicles: braking energy recovery, downhill regeneration, real vs announced range, plug types (T2, CCS, CHAdeMO) and parking rules at charging stations. These questions represent about 7 percent of the exam. Tip: train on at least 50 specific questions before the session.
What changes for the highway code in 2026?
The 2026 code adds 4 major themes: 1) electric vehicles (charging, range), 2) ZFE and Crit'Air stickers (extension to 11 metropolises), 3) soft mobility (scooters, bikes, sharing rules), 4) level 3 automation (legal framework). In total, 90 new questions enter the base since January 2026. The pass threshold remains 35 correct answers out of 40.
How to prepare for the electric questions in the code?
Prioritise reviewing: the 5 plug types (T2, CCS, CHAdeMO, type 1, domestic socket), average charging times (20 minutes to 8 hours), public terminal usage rules (Mobive card, direct card payment since 2024) and fines for abusive parking (35 euros). Tip: train on approved apps with 200 to 300 questions specific to electric vehicles.
What tips to pass the 2026 code on the first try?
The national first-try pass rate reaches 64 percent in 2026. To maximise it: practice on at least 1,500 mock questions (40 per day for 5 weeks), target new 2026 themes (electric, ZFE, soft mobility). Aim for 38/40 in mock series before presenting yourself. Tip: sleep 8 hours the night before, the code requires strong concentration over 40 timed questions.
