Taking your driving test in Lyon means learning to drive in France's third-largest city, around 520,000 inhabitants, prefecture of the Rhone department (69) and capital of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. The Lyon site is shaped by the confluence of the Rhone and the Saone, which divide the city into three distinct areas: the central Presqu'ile peninsula between the two rivers, the left bank of the Rhone facing the Part-Dieu and Gerland districts, and the heights of Fourviere and Croix-Rousse to the west and north. This topography creates specific traffic constraints, with steep climbs, road tunnels and a network of bridges that must be crossed daily.

The structuring axes candidates regularly encounter during training are the Rhone and Saone quays, cours Lafayette which crosses the 3rd arrondissement from east to west, cours Vitton in the 6th, rue de la Republique on the Presqu'ile (largely pedestrianised on its central section), and the Laurent Bonnevay ring road which encircles the east of the metropolitan area. The A6/A7 motorway, whose historic crossing of the city centre was downgraded to an urban boulevard in 2022 between Limonest and Pierre-Benite, remains a major entry axis. The Croix-Rousse tunnel, linking the 1st to the 4th arrondissement, and the Fourviere tunnel beneath the eponymous hill are near-mandatory routes that learners must master.

The Lyon Metropolitan Low Emission Zone, active since 2020, progressively bans the most polluting vehicles. After excluding Crit'Air 5 then 4 categories, the Crit'Air 3 restriction applies on a phased schedule within the perimeter inside the ring road. This context shapes the choice of training and learning vehicle: schools renew their fleets towards recent petrol, hybrid or electric models to remain compliant. For candidates, this means that part of the sectors crossed during lessons already requires a compatible Crit'Air sticker.

The category B practical test in the Rhone is organised by the Departmental Territories Directorate (DDT69), with several test centres in the Lyon agglomeration to absorb a very high volume of candidates. Exam routes generally alternate dense Presqu'ile sectors with their many one-way streets, Rhone crossings via the Lafayette, Wilson or Morand bridges, fast-paced entries onto the quays and quieter residential areas of the 3rd, 6th or 7th arrondissements. The constant coexistence with the four tram lines T1, T2, T3 and T4, whose tracks sometimes share the roadway, and with Velo'v bike-share stations spread across the city, demands careful reading of road markings, anticipation of tram stops and constant blind-spot checks.
