Paris has over 240 km of bus and taxi lanes per City Hall figures (January 2026). These lanes, rolled out since the 2000s, are marked by a solid white line and a pictogram. Driving them in a private car is a serious offence: this guide explains who can legally use them, the sanctions and which exam pitfalls to avoid.
Who can drive Paris bus-taxi lanes
Signage determines authorised vehicles. Four common Paris configurations. 1) « Bus only » lane: only RATP and TCSP buses are allowed. 2) « Bus + Taxis » lane (most common): buses, Paris taxis (G7, Alpha Taxis), VTC authorised in 2024. 3) « Bus + Taxis + Bikes » lane: cyclists added. 4) « Bus + Taxis + Bikes + Powered two-wheelers » lane: very rare, often limited to express axes.
VTC authorised since 2024
Since the 14 March 2024 decree, VTC (Uber, Bolt, Heetch, FreeNow) are authorised in Paris bus-taxi lanes, upon VTC registry validation. This measure was contested by taxis but upheld on appeal. Note: this authorisation does NOT apply to private cars or short-term rental vehicles.
Recognising a Paris bus lane
Two visible elements: ground marking (bus pictogram + possibly taxi + bike + two-wheeler) and side panel at entry (B27a for bus lane, B27b for bus+taxi). The line is continuous: crossing it even 1 second is sanctioned. Some zones have temporary marking only at peak hours (7-10 am and 5-8 pm): read the sign carefully.
Most affected axes
Bus-taxi lanes most often crossed by mistake by exam candidates: boulevard de Sébastopol (4th, right lane), rue de Rivoli (left lane, after corona path), Champs-Élysées (8th), boulevard Saint-Michel (6th), boulevard Voltaire (11th). All these axes are part of typical exam routes: must know.
Sanctions in case of offence
Outside exam, driving a bus-taxi lane is €135 fine and 4 licence points removed (R. 412-7). For a young driver with 6 initial points, half the capital is lost. Stopping in the lane (even minute-arrest) is the same fine. Automatic enforcement cameras, operational since 2022 in Paris, detect these offences 24/7.
At the B driving exam
Driving a bus lane during the exam is an eliminatory fault (E). The examiner sanctions immediately: even 2 seconds are enough. Some stressed candidates cross the line to overtake: automatically fail, even without real safety infraction. Constant vigilance required, especially at exam end when focus drops.
Special cases to know
Three exceptions allow crossing a bus lane continuous line. First, to enter or exit a car park (access gate right): brief crossing tolerated. Second, to avoid an immobile obstacle (broken-down vehicle, works): detour signposted temporarily. Third, to yield to an emergency vehicle (siren and blue light). Outside these cases, the line is absolute.
Contraflow lanes
Some bus lanes run contraflow: buses go opposite to the rest of traffic. Example: boulevard Magenta (10th) bus lane. NEVER enter, even to U-turn: mortal danger. A no-entry sign completes the signage.
Powered two-wheeler use
Paris motorcycles and scooters are sometimes allowed in lanes mentioning « powered two-wheelers ». These authorisations are rare in central Paris. For a car driver, seeing a scooter in a lane does not mean you can too: the ground pictogram prevails.
Training on lane recognition
Your instructor must show at least 5 different Paris lanes and teach you to identify signage. One dedicated hour usually suffices. Waze and Google Maps apps now integrate bus lanes: usable as a learning tool to spot sensitive zones.
