Drink-driving remains France's second cause of road deaths (23 % of fatalities), just behind speed. 2026 rules are strict, sanctions heavy, and screening is intensifying with the alcohol interlock (EAD) and more frequent checks. This guide details legal limits, sanctions and ways to get home safely.
2026 blood-alcohol limits
Two limits coexist in France. 0.5 g/L blood (0.25 mg/L exhaled) : general limit for any driver licensed over 3 years. 0.2 g/L blood (0.10 mg/L exhaled) : lowered limit in force since 2015 for novice drivers (under 3 years probation, 2 years with supervised driving), learner drivers (AAC, supervised), and public-transport drivers (buses, coaches, school transport). 0.2 g/L equals less than one drink - practically: zero tolerance for these drivers.
Benchmarks: how many drinks?
A standard drink (10 g pure alcohol) raises blood-alcohol by about 0.20-0.25 g/L in a 75 kg man, 0.30 g/L in a 60 kg woman. Practically, for a 70 kg adult: 2 drinks reach the 0.5 g/L limit. For a novice, 1 drink exceeds 0.2 g/L. Alcohol elimination: 0.10-0.15 g/L/hour, no more. Coffee or cold shower do not speed elimination: it's a myth.
Checks: 4 types
Police can test under 4 regimes. Preventive: random checks, no prior offence. Post-offence: any driver having committed a road-code offence. Post-accident: mandatory for any driver in a casualty accident, even non-responsible. Suspicion: behaviour suggesting drunkenness (red eyes, erratic driving, smell). Initial test is an electronic breathalyser. If positive, confirmation by legal breath analyser or blood test (if limit contested).
Sanctions for exceeding
Sanctions depend on limit crossed. 0.5 to 0.8 g/L (class 4 offence): €135 fine, 6-point deduction, up to 3-year licence suspension. 0.2 to 0.5 g/L for novice: €135 fine, 6-point deduction (often = probationary licence cancellation). From 0.8 g/L (offence): up to €4,500 fine, 2 years prison, 6-point deduction, up to 3-year licence cancellation, mandatory alcohol interlock upon recovery. Recidivism: doubled penalties and possible vehicle confiscation.
Alcohol interlock (EAD)
The EAD is mandatory for certain drivers since September 2018. Two mandatory-install cases. Conviction for 0.8 g/L or more: judge can impose the EAD as alternative to suspension, or alongside, for 1-5 years. Legal recidivism: EAD mandatory upon licence recovery. Cost: install €800-1,100, monthly rental €100-140. Driver blows before starting; if alcohol > 0.1 mg/L, engine won't start. Device logs all attempts.
Awareness courses
After an alcohol-related offence, a road-safety awareness course is often proposed or imposed. Duration: 2 days (14h). Content: accidentology module, driver-psychology module, alcohol/drugs module. Fee: €130-270. Benefit: 4 points recovered (1 course per 12 months limit). Course is mandatory (not recovery) if imposed by the judge. Official approved centre list on stages-recuperation-points.fr.
Myths to avoid
"I handle alcohol well": blood-alcohol doesn't depend on subjective tolerance. Reflexes are reduced from 0.2 g/L. "I'm just taking over driving": all checks are valid, even as a passenger taking the wheel. "I'll take small roads": gendarmeries run 45 % of screenings in rural areas. "I broke down, so I'm not driving anymore": engine running at standstill equals driving (Cour de cassation 2022 ruling).
Alternatives to get home
Several non-driving solutions. Sam (designated non-drinking driver): national campaign since 2005, widely promoted. "Private driver" service: Heetch and Uber offer discounted rates some nights (MILDECA partnership). Taxi + pick up car next day. Municipal night shuttles (Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Rennes). Public transport (Noctilien in Paris, night buses in most big cities). Carpooling (BlaBlaCar Night).
Cyclists and e-scooters
0.5 and 0.2 g/L limits also apply to cyclists and users of e-scooters, self-balancing wheels and electric hoverboards (treated as Motorised Personal Mobility Devices). Sanctions: €135 flat fine, no points deduction on B licence (bike doesn't depend on licence), but possible criminal record beyond 0.8 g/L.
